The front shocks are pretty dead on my MX5, so i thought I'd look into a set of coilovers. Damn, they want like £700 for a set. Now, I'm all about getting what ya pay for and all that, but if you look at the shocks, they've got a simple eye on the bottom and will bolt to the original top mount, so could i get 'custom' ones cheaper? FrontsRearsHow do i go about ordering a custom set, I'm thinking shock lengths (i want to lower her, so maybe shorter?) Spring rates etc Any help please...

For an MX5, really, I would try to buy a set. It handles so well and you don't want to ruining by not matching shocks and springs properly. Sure there must be cheap coilies coming in from japan? If you can stretch to £400, you won't find much if any better than these: cgi.ebay.co.uk/MAZDA-MX5-89-98-GAZ-COIL-OVER-SUSPENSION-KIT_W0QQitemZ310100068813Alternatively go for some good springs and shocks, I've heard good things about KYB shocks and eibach springs.

Are them coilover kits any good though? I guess they just slip ovcer the shocks? Thing is, like i said, my fronts are pretty knackered so would have to factor the cost of new ones in...

Those coilover things are, well, wibblepoo, and will probably knacker a new pair of shocks in a very short amount of time.

I would say the Gaz kit on MX5 parts site looks the best bet. I've run GAZ setups on my minis in the past and they have always been excellent.

I'm also interested in the original question of whether custom ones are available. I don't want the DIY ones, I'd just like 'normal' coilies to fit my car because you can't get them off the shelf.
