Not sure if Ive ever done a readers ride on my 940. Its been in daily use for the past few years and has been so reliable its kinda just blended into the background. For me I pretty much forget about my cars unless they require almost daily spannering. Its a pity for the Volvo as I had started modding it and getting more power from the 2.3 turbo lump but more needy cars got my attention meaning apart from routine maintenance and repair the Volvo hasn't had any performance modding done for quite a while.
Here it is when I bought it from ebay about 3 years ago, it was the newest and nicest car I had ever bought, I was so chuffed! Even the wife loved it. Instant wInnAr.
Thanks to forums such as the VOC and Turbobricks I managed to get loads of tuning tips and score some cheap performance mods such as,
2.5 inch stainless exhaust with 100 cell high flow cat which helps the turbo spool up much quicker..cound do with being 3 inch and the twin tailpipes are a bit "barry" but meh..
Manual boost controller with boost gauge, the max boot pressure is now 12PSI, giving a nice kick up the ar$e on hard acceleration. Lots of wheel spin on damp roads....
Powder coated 16inch galaxy alloys with new tyres, greatly improves grip and cornering, look pretty snazzy too.
Full autobox flush and filled with fully synthetic oil, oil radiator fitted. Makes a big difference to the feel and smoothness of the box!
Ive bought a few other bits but haven't got round to putting them on, 501 cylinder head from a 740 turbo with a hot cam (forget which one it is!) a 15G turbo from an 850 turbo T5, big fuel injectors (forget exactly which type!) and If I fancy some serious power a welded 940 exhaust manifold thats been milled to accept a Garrett T3 turbo as fitted to sapphire cosworths. To fit that id need a 3 inch custom exhaust system though!
So far the power has gone up from 130BHP to approx 200BHP+ which makes it great to drive although the boaty suspension makes it less than fantastic round the corners. I need uprated IPD anti roll bars! Maybe that should be my next step rather than getting more power. Safety first and all that.
Cosmetic mods have included clear indicators from a VERY late 940 (even later than my 1997 model) Later black grille and an electric drivers seat from a V90. This needed to be recovered with the seat covers from the 940 to match to the other seats. I learned alot doing that! Ive got a powered passenger seat to go in too but need a spare Saturday to do it in.
New grille!
Kenlowe autobox oil cooler
Bazookas,
Recovering the drivers seat,
Ideal for irritating the neighbours by towing things like this.
Oil change, this is the best pic I have of it as it looks now.
I also fitted a brink detachable towbar, very straightforward as the bolt holes are already in the chassis with captive nuts to bolt the towbar on to and the wiring plugs straight in. Clever Volvo!
Thats it so far I think. Its used by the wife everyday as its so reliable. Good job the cost of fuel is slowly coming down.
