So I guess most people don't know much more about this car beyond this photo. So lets have a couple more : How it started : Engine build up : Inside : Bosozoku flag style!? Got Tyre Fitment?! Yum Build up thread is here : www.bilforumet.no/140/155244-volvo-144-deluxe-1971-a.htmlHopefully "Volvo 144 Deluxe" will be able to pop along and talk some mroe about it

I love it, colour is great, the amount of chrome still on it, detailing, stance and attitude are perfect, not so keen on that steering wheel but for a moaner like me to only have one minor critism is a good sign. Also goes to show you don't need poke and stretch to be cool. top car, look forwards to seing more of it.

Just whizzed through the thread. When you were talking a the Ace I was imagining it had some mego turbo-nutter volvo lump under the bonnet and am actually pleasantly surprised to see what looks like a prety stock-ish lump. Quality attention to detail, home built in a shed. A very worthy winner indeed.

How did the RR community come to know of this car? Was it purely through the nomination via the one photo?
Or is the car widely known on the forum? Featured coverage elsewhere?
Nice brick!

Works for me, the front grill is a bit too wide and blank without the diagonal trim, but apart from that I like it

How did the RR community come to know of this car? Was it purely through the nomination via the one photo? Literally through the one photo ... I was pretty suprised it won to be honest, I though Rothwell's Standard was a shoe in for it. With the votes being hidden this year voting patterns were a little bit different to previous years. Once I'd found out more about the car I was completely at peace with it winning, it is a great car and a fantastic example to everyone that a little bit more attention to detail doesn't need to be on a massive expensive build to make for a world class car. I'm loving the front wheel fitment on this a lot.

Who'd have thought that a battleship-grey Volvo could look so cool? That's a real beauty and a credit to its owner. The steering wheel does look like it came from a Maxx-ed Corsa though!

It's a real testament to how cool and obviously well built this car is by the fact that it won just from one photo.
Masively impressed by it TBF,that engine is hugely more impressive due to the fact its basically a smild stock lump,I like that far more than if it had something awesumz in it.
Top work, 10/10

I rather like that insane Scandinavian tuner turbo Volvo lump HW found in another thread. ("World's fastest Volvo" or summat?) I mean if leaving stock untouched lumps in situ is "mega" better than modifying the powerplant, then true mechanical rodding is a dead art. For me, it's more than tires and springs with stripes and a roofrack. YMMV, and that's fine. Only speaking for me.
This opinion is nothing to do with the Volvo at hand, for it was decided best without any powerplant details. And that's fine! I quite like it.

Didn't mean I thought it was better than uber tuned mega-plants,just nice to see something a bit different.Makes us mere mortals realise that you can have something genuinely special and ultra awesome without throwing humongous dollar at a project! I thought it had something special in it,just judging from that one pic.Was a slightly pleasant surprise to see something simple in there.Would have voted for it either way. Just my 2p

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Also goes to show you don't need poke and stretch to be cool. Poke and stretch are only a side effect of fitting deep dished wheels to cars designed for high offset wheels. Dish is what we aim for!

It was definately in my top 3 that's for sure. As has been said, I thought Dave Rothwell's was a certainty. Maybe its destined to be always the bridesmaid.........?

I been around long enough to remember when the only car with high offset wheels was the mini, poke still looks pants whatever the reason for it.

Poke and stretch are only a side effect of fitting deep dished wheels to cars designed for high offset wheels. C'mon, Adam. You have a driver's license now, not a license to stretch the facts. ;D
