I was trying not to post this here as its a bit off topic but I am having not much luck elsewhere. I know there are a few recovery van owners on here and I was wondering who you used for insurance? I was going to insure as a recovery truck but was told to get motor trade insurance as this would cover it. Only problem with that is I have no premises yet so cant get cover this way. I would be really gratefull for a few recomendations if you have the time. Thank you and have a pic of what I bought, Dave (Thats my van on the back as well)

Thats what I was thinking but the last place I went to, that was their first question and when I said I didnt have premises they said no go.
I called Footman James a week and a half ago and appart from a call to say they were working on it I have heard nothing and I have a van arriving this week from the states I would like to collect myself now I have the means.
Dave.

I'm with Crowthorne brokers (Peterborough way I think) and they were cool about me not having premises, got the truck insured with them no bother at all.

I'm with ENSIGN through ADRIAN FLUX who is a custom car insurer. No premises needed and you can choose the extent of your cover ie.
American cars LHD imports Camper & Motorhomes Modified cars RS Recovery Classic's Trailer's
Ive got all that +7.5ton and it costs me £900.
Nice westy ;D

Cheers guys, all helping me on this learning curve.
Gasserjay, is that a list of what you can carry or a list of what you are restricted to?
Are you covered to use any car if its in your care/own it or just to drive it onto your truck?
Just trying to arm myself with as much info as I can.
Many thanks, Dave

I have had my traders policy with footman james for 7 years now, no premises trading from home and just added my recovery truck to the list, third party only £317 a year.

Many thanks, Dave The policy covers me to drive any car or truck all the time. The policy states any vehicle the property or in custody or control of the policy holder. They are all vague and say you can drive anything but I claiming might be another thing. On my policy I had to state what percentage of my work is classic or modified etc which is 99% , then you update the insurance database yourself on what vehicles you have. You can still drive others you are just not covered quite as much. In other words say you have 15 classics and a truck+trailer you would have them all listed and could drive them all whenever you want and they will have full cover ie windscreen ,breakdown, fully comp etc. If you don't update the database then you would not be covered as much. Like if every car in your street got vandalised and you said you were looking after them, they probably won't pay out. Hope that helps.

Ah cool, I get it now. I assume however nothing is on an agreed value so its worth keeping my type 3 and my own van on the agreed value policy?
Is that your westy? Its very nice. I brought in a 69 delux microbus that would have been the same colour if it hadnt faded.
Dave.

When they say 'premises' do they mean a yard/garage or just a registered address (your house)?

Don't forget if you're doing recovery work for others you'd really need 'goods in Transit' insurance. Scrappers/bangers/sub five hundred quiers no bother as you could pay out yourself if you did manage to knacker them somehow but I wouldn't move anything of any real value with g-i-t insurance.

Well, that didnt go well. Tradex quoted me £3743 I must be doing something wrong. Dave Yup. Tradex have always been a last resort as far as I'm concerned . . . but if there's one thing going for 'em it's that they're cheap as chips! Try leafing through the insurance ads in the Auto Trader and bashing the phone - there'll be a broker there who's dead keen to do this and they'll have a scheme which'll be cheap. Sadly, my boss ain't one of them . . . Oh, btw, just to clarify what gasserjay said, you'll be covered for anything in your custody or control and there shouldn't be any differences in cover. Restrictions will be in terms of value, performance models and imports due to the perceived risk. The insurer database thing is to do with EU regs and is for stuff you're going to have longer than 14 days - so the BiB's have got a record of it being insured basically. Doesn't go down well if you haven't complied - as my trader mate discovered when he got pulled in the Scooby he'd had for 3 months!

Maybe I shouldnt have phoned at half 4, he was probably wanting to get rid of me to get home.
I think its safe to say tradex have been scored off the list and as its been 2 weeks since I phoned footman james they are coming close to being scored off as well.

Weight of a van with full interior is under 1.5ton so easily within 3.5ton limit. Wouldnt fancy carrying my pickup on it but; Dave.
