was just scanning through ebay, looking at cheap cars and I came across a mk1 ibiza, which got me thinking about the system porsche ibizas. whats the crack with them? I know porsche had something to do with the engine, but what exactly? my sister had a 1.2 ibiza as a 1st car and I remeber it being pretty good fun to drive compared with my 1 litre polo at the time. heres an ibiza related pic for your troubles. (its slightly obscurred by my newbie styled 1st car though

Porsche also had a hand in the Lada Samara btw - Trust, me - it doesn't make it a cool car!

I thought it was only the 1.5s that had system Porsche and from memory it was something silly like the alternator bracket that they had a hand in.

Porsche developed the engine, although I'm not sure if they actually designed it. I was reading about it recently in an old issue of CAR but I can't remember! ;D

Great cars. 75 bhp, but feels like a lot more as very torquey. Could always keep up with my XR2 at the time. However suspension is very soft and wallowy. I like it as they are comfortable, but not to everyones taste. As for the Porsche involvement they "developed" the engine....erm all It really was the engine mountings, and the fuelling. However bearing in mind the 1.2 was underpowered the 1.5 "porsche"was a little gem of an engine afterwards. The chassis was from the Fiat Ritmo (Strada) which in turn was from a Fiat 128 however its very well proven and I will have to say all the 1.5 Ibiza's ive had have never failed their Mot's on welding. Maybe I'm just lucky?

we have a system porsche, it was kept in a barn for 5 years so its was rusty free , as has been said before they do wallow abit but put your foot down and I usd to hassle jags on the way to work on the duel carrage way. off the top of my head I think they are only around 750 kg so the 75bhp does go along way , I would not mind finding out more about they tuning them, but cant touch it as its my dads daily !

My other half had one that used to be her Mum's, seem to remember it being thought of as a po' boys GTi at the time, not having the performance but being a lot cheaper to insure. Quite nippy and did good cruise speeds. Plenty reliable but wallowy when the shocks/springs went, which was quite early. Bit tinny too.

i was working on these cars in the nineties, suspension is great (a transverse leaf spring at the rear), Porsche developed the engine , i think the money run out when they were on the gearbox, as the gear box was very noisy.... build quality was ahem spanish, the only down sides for me was the driving position and the gear box.... they had several different engines, 1,2 with 60 BHP (carb) , 1,2 with 70 BHP (fuel injection and cat), 1,5 85 (BHP carb), 1,5 90 BHP (fuel injection), 1,5 100 BHP (fuel injection but no cat, it as called SXI over here) and a very limited number of 1,7 (also 100 BHP but with fuel injection and cat). There were also Diesels available, that was a 1700 Fiat engine (water pump was also the engine mount).... oh yeah, there were the 0.9l ones, too, with the engine from the Marbella.... i remember they had loads of cavity wax when they were new, though they rusted away over here.... the Porsche engines were ok, though you had to rev the hell out of them to drive "fast".... handling was superb....

mmm spent some time working on these when they were new as far as i'm aware the system porsche bit was porsche did some work on the heads (valves and guides) and also some work on the syncro's in the box as said before the 1.5sxi was entertaining to drive but if you can find one the 1.7 called the sportline in the uk could be the one to go for i only ever had a go in one of these though as for the 900cc ones you had to rev the t*ts off them to move them would be interesting to see a couple now
