Guess it depends what sort of vehicle the key is for, some cars can have second hand keyfobs recoded, others cant.

Timpson the shoe people can copy some for about £35. Some locksmiths can do it too. On some cars you can code in an extra key yourself provided you've already got one I think.
It depends on the model though.
For an alfa 156, only the dealer can do it and the key + prpgramming is about £160.
For a key! 2 years ago I was driving a car that I didn't pay that much for.

Cheers guys. The key is for the VW car transporter in the pics so its for an X reg VW commercial. I tried Timpsons but no joy.
VW. I don't know the story on the 356, found the pics on an Australian forum but no background. Scary aint it? You can imagine being amazed at finding it, organising a way to get it out then the horror as it turns to dust in front of you.
Thanks for your help guys, Dave.

i think theres a transponder in the key, so you could have two keys without transponder made by the locksmith and hde just the one with the transponder behind the dashboard.... no good idea of course when someone tries to steal the van...

This depends. On Fords with the red chip yes you can go to Timpsons etc. but for the blue chips, you're stuffed if you don't have the two keys with working chips, as it's dealer only coding. FWIW, try a VW specialist. I know for my Pug it's given me another option on how to reprogramme a key fob.

on a VW you should be able to remove the chip from the key,so you could tape that behind the dash and its going to be less noticable (and cheaper ) than sticking a whole key there.personally i'd find another VW dealer, £50 to code a key is extortion,it only takes 10 mins ,or do they really charge £300 and hour labour?

If the tape becomes unstuck (as I've seen happen) you have an even bigger problem then.
FWIW, try a Skoda dealership. Sounds stupid, but I know of quite a few people who get VAGs serviced from Skoda due to the costs being cheaper.

No they charge £50 per hour or part hour. Doesn't matter if the job takes 5 mins or 59 mins it's £50. ROBBING BARSTEWARDS.
