Hi there i thought id do a thread on the charade Gtti. I used to have a nice black example that was the ex daihatsu UK press car. Nice little number with a BBR conversion star chip exhaust filter 15psi boost, good for 147bhp and some serious torque steer! heres my old car The charade was actually designed as a group B rally car. The engine was designed to take mega power and be mid mounted. I am not too sure if the car was ever actually used in anger, but it looks pretty cool! There was also a wide arch kit available, but not many were made, the gtti looks really really mean with this set up. Here is a sound clip so that the people who have never heard what the 3 cylinder sounds like can hear it. I liken it to the skyline and porsche turbo kinda sound. This is not my car unfortunatly, but i have got a video somwhere but i cannot find it at the mo media.putfile.com/gtti_1As i think you can tell i have quite a soft spot for these cars, they are fast cheap to insure and make an awsome noise. The styling is not for everyone, but then again you sit inside the car and look out! cheers J

wow.... not many cars can pull off a wide arch kit (remembers Reiger BMW's and shudders) but that's pretty cool.
what kind of performance did you get from your tuned one?

File doesn't work for me. Never seen that mid-engined concept. Here's a couple of Detomaso Charades though -

I never really measured the performance, i recon it was about 6sec to 60, and would have topped out at the limiter in 5th probably about 130mph. I once chased a BMW 325i on the motorway and was sat on his bumper at a jolly fast speed, he pulled in the the middle lane and waved me past!
I should have kept it, but hey at the time it was costing me a lot of money to keep on the road the gearbox was sounding a touch dodgy after a little wastegate trouble and 2bar boost. The time will come when i get another one, ill get one that isnt looking too good and mid mount the engine, full rebuild, straight cuts in the 'box, T3 and supercharger, and 220bhp. Should make for an entertaining car!

see it does really match it dosent it? its like a modern imp engine small 993cc, turbocharged, high revving engine, its just begging for it!
Apparently the charade engine will go to 11K, with the stock internals. MMmmm i wonder what itll go to with forged i-beam rods? Oh man ive got it real bad now, mid engined imp, charade CB80 engine with a tubular manifold and a T3 turbo, an M45 supercharger on the otherside, the 5 speed alfa 'box so it would all sit longditudinal. mmmmm would make one hell of a car.
cheers

yeah i recon 500kg would be attainable with the spaceframe and a few steel panels. And then the engine would be around the 200bhp mark, that makes me 400bhp per tonne! I would have to change the front suspension slightly, to remove the camber change. the thing is there will be very little imp left by the time i finish, do i want to take it that far?

I see what you mean, the ultimate Daihatsu-engined Imp wouldn't be very much Imp at all, seeing as the chassis would be a custom spaceframe, the engine would be Daihatsu, the transaxle Alfa Romeo, and the panels mainly lightweight replicas, but I reckon even if you didn't go just as extreme, and stuck a little closer to the standard Imp shell, except modded to accomodate a mid engine, and fully caged to handle the extra power and torque, a few suspension mods to get the camber how you like it, that sort of thing, and you could still have a pretty cool car with a serious power-weight ratio that still resembles an Imp.

I was thinking of changing the front dampers for something MacPherson strut. This woul keep camber as the suspension compressed rather than the swing axle. This would also mean that i could run the 10"x13" wheels i want on the front ;-) i guess it could be a good start, and then progress to the spaceframe.

Loving GTti's at the moment, would it be possible for an 18y/o to get insured on one of these at a half decent price?

I was shelling out £1000 at 21, so probably not but shop around, may be worth a try. I was quoted up to £2500, more than the car was worth! J

The one I know of came over from the UK early this year , think it was K reg and its white. My landlord's son has it and he crashed it on a straight stretch of road.Still rolling but needs all the front end. Wonder would he sell it cheap...

There used to be a Cabriolet GTti parked outside RGS Motorsport - It was there for ages, I guess it was waiting for a vital but hard to source part A mate of mine used to have one & was a member of the owners club, this picture was taken after he had sold it on to a fellow enthusiast who also joined the club. It was actually his first car when he was about 19 & I think it cost him about £800 to insure - though this was about 5 or 6 years ago know. I can remember it being a great little car - very quick up to about 60-70 with an engine that sounded like a 911s Unfortunately parts were expensive and really hard to get hold of We always used to laugh at his best Quarter mile time cos although he did a very respectable 16.2 in stock trim, he reached 64mph by the 1/8th but was still only doing about 68mph across the line
