I'm really not very good at this "cutting down" business. A few months ago I decided that 12 cars was too many and it was time to have a clearout. So I did, and now I have 15. Something went a bit wrong there I think...
So anyway, about this Rover.
Model: Rover 2600S
Year: 1982
Mileage: 117,000
Tax: None
MOT: December 2009
Location: Norfolk
Price: 300
I bought it because I'd never owned or even driven an SD1 before, and it was one of the cars that had always been on my list of cars to own one day. I actually like it more than I was expecting to, and one day when space is at less of a premium I'll have another.
It's got its good points and its bad points. It's basically a sound, solid car, which drives pretty much as it should. The engine is in good health - sounds sweet and pulls well, with good oil pressure, and doesn't get hot. It also sounds great when you open it up. At the moment the idle is a bit lumpy, especially when cold - I think one of the carbs would probably benefit from being tweaked by somebody who knows more about carbs than I do. It has a manual choke.
The gearbox works fine - a bit notchy as they all are, but does what it's supposed to do - but it does whine a bit, especially in first and second. It's not one of those whines that suggests imminent gearbox implosion though, and I've actually grown used to it - it adds to the character of the car. It's an LT77 box anyway, as used in most manual SD1s as well as TR7s and various Land Rovers, so everything's easily available to sort any problems.
The bodywork is mostly OK - no major dents or bad rust - but the paint has faded a bit, as old silver paint often seems to. It's not hanging by any stretch, and from a short distance away it looks fine. The rear arches have been repaired at some point, and although I've seen far worse jobs the repairs are visible. Underneath looks pretty sound and the tyres are all OK.
The interior is a mixed bag - seats are quite good but the headlining's been removed, leaving just the backing board. All the instruments seem to work OK. The screen wash and fuel pump have been wired up to separate switches, but otherwise all the knobs and buttons work. Lights are all OK, including the front fogs, and main beam headlights are some of the best I've had in any car. The rear wiper arm is missing, but the motor still works, and the heated rear window works too. The front passenger electric window doesn't work; driver's window works fine, rear windows work after a fashion but are sluggish as they haven't been used much recently.
I think that's more or less covered it - it's not perfect but it's a sound useable SD1, and it's got 8 months' test left so could be used straight away - I used it constantly when I first bought it and it never gave me any trouble. Any questions or for further details please PM; I'll get some better pics up once it stops raining.
