depends on the terms of your autoaid cover, when i was with RAC they covered the driver, so any car / van was covered, as long as i was present, some other companies cover your car, and if the reg. is differnet to the one on your agreement, they wont touch it

does cover me , not just my car...so a friends car would be fine
dunno if they look into the fact it has no tax/mot/insurance before paying out though

I use them, the car being recovered needs to have MOT and TAX e.t.c but I guess you could get a friendly local recovery firm to recover it but say it was a different car on the documents you send off to claim the costs back. It would be abusing the system quite a bit and if you get caught out you could be in trouble. Up to you if you try it!

yes, most of them require the vehicle to be taxed, others motted - and they will check via the web before sending a recovery truck

Autoaid is a breakdown "insurance" You arrange your own recovery, pay for it then send the receipt off to autoaid who then reinburse you. The problem will come when autoaid get the receipt, tap the plate into their computer and see the car has been out of tax since 1979.....

A mate tried this with an xr3i he'd bought 100 miles away and had no tax/insurance. He planned it all in advance, he stripped apart a spare fuel pump relay and "burnt out" the contacts inside. We drove down, bought the car, drove it around the corner and swapped in the duff relay then called the AA. The guy was there in 20 mins, took 2 more minutes to diagnose the relay!! then called another local patrol who had a spare relay on his van (for a 25 year old escort!) So he ended up paying £15 for a relay he didn't need as he had the good one in his pocket, and a fraught 100 mile drive up the A1 without tax/insurance and sweating at the sight of every police car.!
