Hi there, I've got a peugeot 205 1.8 turbo diesel, it's an XUD7T engine and it's developed a VERY loud knocking sound! I was driving home from work was about 2 miles from home and it very suddenly got very loud, I pulled over and had a look under the bonnet and found the alternator belt shredded but still just holding on! Naturally I thought it was that flailing around, I replaced the belt and it's still making the noise! Any ideas are apriciated!! Cheers Ant

:)Take the belt off and start the engine....if the noise goes it'll most likely be the alternator bearings...which most likely caused the belt to shred.

Could be one of many things. Could be anything from buggered crank bearings to injectors knocking. Without hearing it theres not a great deal we can do really.
Like reeman237 says, start by checking the cambelt and timing.

Reeman - that' gonna be my first port off call tomorrow but i'm thinking it's somthing more serious than that! I didn't mention that it's seriously down on power as well need to rev the nuts off of it to get it to move I had to move it last night and was whincing at the noise it was making! There is however an upside to this! I had to get the train in today so my boss offered me his Reliant Scimitar GTE 5SE for a couple of weeks so I can get to work! Yay! I love that car it's great!

My vote would be that the shredded belt has fouled on the timing belt drive and caused it to jump a tooth as Reeman said. Happened on my Xantia TD and is quite common.
