probably not used because of better alternatives for the same price or cheaper I'm struggling to see how I can go wrong though.. they're cheap and plentiful, the 120bhp 1.6 is ideal for my application, it has a gearbox that doesn't require custom bellhousings and trying to figure out what clutch would work.. I'm working on the assumption that with a complete donor it will also be possible to use stock management as well. I'm over simplifying it, undoubtedly, but if I go into it with full knowledge then I'd probably never attempt it!

its probably more to do with MX5's holding their money and not going rusty more than anything else, add to that the (relatively) small numbers that are made and there just wont have been that many cheap donor cars around, also most people will choose the most power they can get from a given size of engine (dimensions not cc) for there budget and while there are 2 litre engines around that are very similar sized with more power they'll always be more popular as engine swops, its not like road cars have class restrictions and inurance costs don't really come into once the car is modded anyway.
