Mojo status - Restored. After fighting to get this running right for aages, I resorted to taking everything apart, cleaned it, made new gaskets out of proper gasket paper, and rebuilt it all with a thin smear of Hylomar Blue. I turned the key and after filling the chambers it fired up, and it runs like a sewing machine! Only needed choke for 30 secs, and settled to a lovely idle, rock steady at just under 1000rpm, with no missing or hesitation at all. The list of remaining stuff to do now looks so much shorter, I'm going to crack on tomorrow!

15s on the small side (or do you mean the width of the 15's?)! They are friggin perfect, you might be able to get away with 16s but any bigger IMO won't look right. I mean the 15s with 45 profiles on looked a little lost in the rear arches. I guess with some stick that'd sort it out. I can't stop looking at picture of this atm: 16in 3 piece Ronal Racing mag splits. Mmmmmm Them wheels look like 13"`s or 14"`s to me But havent seen that many E21`s

nice little project this.
I spent ages the other night trying to find your thread!
I bought some Tii inlet manifolds from eBay a little while ago, i think i might go for bike carbs too, bogg brothers are only up the road from me.
don't think there will be much power advantage though - you need cams / ignition / exhaust upgrades to get the best out of decent carbs.
i agree with others - you should defo fit the rims in the first pic!

Cheers for the feedback! Glad someone is enjoying my ramblings.
Yes the Eclat wheels will defo be going on in time. If I can find someone that wants less than £25 to take the tyres off!
Bogg Bros do make nice manifolds, but I prefer not to spend £80 and make something myself that looks a little less fancy! If it's not free to cheap it generally doesn't get a look in

I spent a really nice day yesterday tying up loose ends on this, got a mouthful of screenwash trying to fix the inoperative washers, and had to devise a solution for the numberplate lights whose connectors disintegrated in my hands I had a good poke round underneath again, and I think it might just be MOT'able. I'll try and get it booked in for Friday I'm still undecided as to whether to put the twin light grille on too, or just stick with the singles.

Singles! Or isn't there an option for duals, where the high beam is slightly smaller than the low beam? That one is hot.

i had the twin lamps and now ive gone single - you will find people have mixed opinions about them but tbh i prefer the singles makes the front end much less fussy and therefore looks more better.
I am keeping my twin hella lamps though - never know may want to change back!
Props on not spending too much - i am having major problems with that at the moment!

I think I'll stick with singles for now, but if I do decide to go with twins (so to speak) I think this is the look I'll be after: Don't get me wrong, I'd like to have the luxury of spending lots on this, but the idea behind the project was not to spend thousands, and so far it hasn't really needed it. In an ideal world it'd be getting 6 cylinders, coilovers and a set of shiny splits!

Wheels look wonderfull mate, don't think it needs a massive drop though, "just a bit of seepage" will look good.

Cheers mate. As soon as the MOT's sorted I think the springs will get a mild dose of grinder.
I'm a big fan of your touring by the way. Spent yesterday scouring ebay for a cheap one to no avail.

sumpcracker - I love those pictures!! The e21 alpina is just sex! Gorgeous! On the headlight front Tom - for what it's worth - I'm with you on the single headlights! The e21 duals and the e30's are twin 5"? rounds as the grille isn't big enough to take the larger 7" lights like the e28 and they just don't look quite right the same size!
Car looks good though - more pictures of it with those wheels though - are they Penta's? They look a lot like the ones I have in the garage for the M535i and I like the two tone a lot indeed - I think I now have a plan for my wheels as they need a refurbish anyway and I have been umming and ahhing about that to go with! Any news on the MOT?

Sumpcracker - If ever I needed inspiration then that's it right there. I'm still undecided on the front air dams though, I think it's the way they don't follow through with the sills. That last one is spot on the money though. Jonmsm - The wheels are Schmidt Revolution Modernlines, I've got them on my Mk1 Golf daily at the min, but I was pleasantly surprised by how well they suit the E21, especially the colour. Oh and the singles are definitely staying I'm taking the Golf off the road for winter (scraping ice off the inside of the windscreen is a time consuming process) and when I do I'll probably pick up some spacers and put the Schmidts on the E21. The MOT's booked for 2pm, I dropped it in there before work this morning. As soon as I know, I'll post the result!

Good luck, we need more E21s on the road. Looking forward to seeing more pictures.

Just had a brief garbled conversation with my MOT man. FAIL.
Something about the brake linkage causing the brakes to bind? I did feel as though the pedal was reluctant to spring back when pushed but I lubricated all the linkages.
Bumhats.

Right, so the car failed the test due to the brakes binding. Having researched the problem I found that the servo linkage had seized up, and the spring on the pedal was seriously weak. I've since stripped and lubed the linkage, replaced the pedal spring, and added another on the link arm to the servo for good measure. It's back in for MOT tomorrow, so hopefully this time it'll sail through!
