as much as i love my little 205 i bloodly hate torsion bars is it possible to have them removed and have some kind of new suspension put on the back e.g. coil overs............... would be getting it done by a machanic rather than on the drive

Tis do-able but theres a lot to it as the torsion bars hold the swinging arms on the beam as well as being springy...
You need to do away with teh anti roll bars through the centre of the axle tube and bolt straight through to hold the ends on. Then all you need to do is weld some boxes into the inner arches to accept the coilovers... Job done.

Why how low do you want it???
You can adjust the bars so the car will sit on its bump stops or have 8 inch arch gaps or ANYWHERE in between!!!
If you need it lower then i'm affraid thats a whole new ball game dude!
You are right though they're a royal pain in the ass to adjust...

I assume from these comments that 205 torsion bars adjust differently to those on Japanese 4x4's?? On my Delica, you tighten or looses a nut on a lever arm and this adjusts the torsion bar. You can set the ride height to the exact mm if you want (usually to around 5mm which is nothing when the arch gaps are measured in KM ;D) Lifting (or lowering) is simply a case of winding this nut one way or the other until you get the height you want. Easy

You assume correctly. The bars run latteraly across the axle beam instead of longitudinally and are splined each end. The method of adjustment requires (depending on amount of drop) removal of the swinging arms off the end of the beam (easiest but 10mm increments) OR removal of the torsion bars completely(harder but finer adjustment)...

DO IT NOW!![/glow] I'd need to see a stripped axle beam but i reckon it's not TOO hard a job matey, coilovers would be the main expense, then a pair of turret boxes unless you can fabricate your own... Have you got access to a welder?

It's not like that costs you anything either.

I'm with you on the need to remove torsion bars for lowering. The problem I found is that loosening off the torsion bars makes the suspension softer. I used to have a lowered mk1 106, the handling was lethal, stiffened springs at the front, softened torsion at the back = unpredictable and sudden oversteer at high speed.

Couldn't you fabricate some sort of adjustable spring-plate end? Like an adjustable cam gear for an OHC engine, where you have one plate splined to the torsion bar and the other mounted to the suspension arm. Then you would just need to bolt them together with slotted bolt holes for adjustment. Sounds a lot easier than fabricating shock towers and converting to coil-overs to me.

deejay i only have acsses to a mig welder...... but there are loads of small fabrication places round here so getting things made wont be hard/ maybe expensive but in the long run worth it. Adambt thats the reason i want rid i live in a village so bombing through the lanes cant really aford to have the back end out all over the place. think i might ring round a few places and get some fabrication quotes

belt tensioner, sort of like a droop stop-er, tighten it way up and you'll be on your in no time.
