.. and if the answer is what I expect, what is about that is visually similar but quieter? The size and shape of a Cherry Bomb type silencer is ideal for my side exit exhaust plans, and would undoubtedly be marginally quieter than the snapped in half system on it at present.. but I don't want to draw any more negative attention/reason for being pulled over than I have to... Don't look like they'll do much at all to me ;D

I did some experiments years ago with a single cherrybomb, some straight 2" pipe, some bent around axles type 2" pipe and my 2 ltr rover engine. I found that once I added some gentle bends into the system, the noise level went down far more dramatically than what it was with just a plain pipe with or without the cherrybomb over the end. It really depends on what size/type engine you have, the exhaust manifolds whether they're cast iron or tubular, how many bends there are in the system and how much muffling you have.

as a general rule cherry bombs are loud, here's the quietest one i ever had. this has a cherry bomb back box and one other box, the middle box was replaced with straight pipe, there was a lot of deeper sound there too that my wibblepoo camera couldnt pick up.
though ive had others that were easily twice as loud as that datsun the other guy posted

The pic you have is of a centre silencer - the backboxes have a little more to them. I have a Custom Chrome Racing one I got from someone on ebay and its not too bad. Mostly depends on the engine though - I still have a frontbox and the cherry rear on my 1.8 16v and its pretty damned loud, like johnny somersett's was. Have a look through here, they even do side exit stuff! www.custom-chrome.co.uk/shop/catalog/index.php

Yep, I figure it pays to be sensible with something like noise.. Especially when the car in question is a matt black Volvo 240, lowered over banded steels, tyres are going to have a smidge of stretch on them..
I don't think loud is a problem in itself, but it should be a nice, rounded sound. The best comparison I can make is a pair of speakers that cost you £20 may be as loud as a pair of B&Os finest, but one will sound good. If a loud noise is a pleasantly loud noise then I don't think it would be too much of an issue. I fear cherry bombs may be a little to 'abrasive' to the ear.

during my limited experiments with chopping/changing exhausts, I have found that the tail pipe length makes a lot off difference (Ie, short.no tailpipe = very loud bassy exhaust, langer tailepipe (12") = less noise.
Try it out by placing bits of pipe together over the exhaust.

Cherrybombs seem ok at low throttle but get them 'singing' and they are loud, including on overrun. They sound awesome on a V8. (And should only be fitted to V8s really ) Lovely bassy but mellow sound at idle. Worst sounding exhaust I have ever heard on American cars is incidently is 'flowmaster' .

Cherrybombs are pretty awesome haha. Had one fitted to my Sierra as the only box on the car. Made lovely over-run popping noises and sounded pretty funny.

My Uno was deafeningly loud with just a Cherry Bomb back box. I fitted a Peco in its place and it was still very loud but a lot less annoying.

Mines not very loud at all on the Corona and it's the only box on there. It is quite a long one though (oo err!)

I have a 12" Cherry Bomb on the Laurel in place of the back box, and although it's now a lovely burble, you'd certainly not call it loud by any means. There are two 90 deg bends after the bomb though.

Yeah I got cherry bombs on the Thunderbird. However some like the sound, some hate the sound. I've not heard my car from outside being ragged so can't comment too much but it sounds great in the driver seat especially in tunnels and under bridges etc. The noise seems to be directly related to the throttle position. So it's not loud at idle or on cruise, but pretty damn loud on full throttle. Flowmasters are ok, but I've only really heard them on lumpy cammy V8s so are always likely to sound good.

Food for thought then.. I pick up the car tonight so I may have to have a rethink and see how I route it to get a sound I'm happy with (freeflowing with gentle bends and a longish tailpipe..)

Flowmaster do several different boxes from almost stock through to "race mufflers" which don't seem to do any silencing at all. They used to (may still have) a thing on their website where you could hear the different types.

oh and...
nothing sounds worse than a slow/underpowered car with a loud raspy exhaust. I remember seeing a Mk1 Fiesta a while back with a honkin red cherry bomb on it, I reckon it must have been a 950 Popular Plus or something cos you heard him coming a mile away, then you saw him coming, coming, coming, ever so slowly, then past and could hear him for another 10 minutes as he went away into the distance, ragging the snot out of that thing but still being passed by the busses.
uncool.
car which burbles past in traffic with a noticable, thumping exhaust note, which only gets proper loud when it peels away (into the dual carridgeway, naturally), thats cool.
