What an awesome response ;D
I can't remember who asked what.. But the colour will most definitely be brown, but the level of gloss/satin is yet to be decided. It won't be glossy, but it won't look like dry mud either.. Rear end needs very little to sort. The lights need mounting closer to the body, which is easy, and the bumper moving in, which is also easy. The bumpers will be going satin black as well..
Thanks again go to Mystery Machine for offering to help, remaining in high spirits when it was all going tits up and making it possible for a (nearly complete) one day swap to happen. Thanks must also go to Volvo544special65 who has used his knowledge to help me along the vast majority of this project.
Good news comes in the form of me visiting my local Volvo dealer and telling me the missing bits are available if I need them (at a price). He gave me an exploded diagram so I'll go and compare what I've got with the diagram to be sure exactly which part I need. The plastic bezel is also available, but the price for that was £53 plus VAT, which isn't the end of the world, but chuffing spendy for what it is. I'm looking second hand first...

I've been lurking on this forum for a while now and finally decided to register.
I'm interested to see how this 240 turns out - should be a one-off in the UK I think.
I have a used headlight surround which you can have for the cost of the postage if you want. I also have two early 244s for breaking should you come across anything else you need...the downside is I'm in North Yorkshire!
Incidentally I took the bonnet off the blue 244 in Wigan for one of my (many) Volvo projects and I see you've ended up with the "exchange" one I gave the seller. The yard was something else wasn't it - I was there in the fog and darkness on Monday night!
Cheers Simon

I'll do the whole story later, but me and Mystery Machine drove to Wigan yesterday to swap the front end from an older 244. Needless to say, it didn't go smoothly and there are a couple bits missing (I have the grille but it isn't fitted in this pic). I'll get there, but there's alot of work to do, and I really need to get hold of one of the light surrounds.. Bruce should be along later with some decent pictures Can't wait to see the pics on this story, keep it up its coming along great ;D

This is great! It's something I always wanted to do to my 264, put on an earlier front end. In the end I didn't even manage to get it MOT'd... too many projects. Looks absolutely great, it's really good to see this familiar car evolving with its new owner!

I quite like the patina of the brown bonnet ;D The yard was certainly an experience that I don't think I'll be wanting to repeat.. I don't mind a bit of dirt and oil, but it was just plain unpleasant there, and the guy that had it wasn't the nicest of people.. Ah well, live and learn! I see you borrowed his bonnet hinges too ;D It sounds as though you may have the bits I'm after which is bloody brilliant. You sir, have a PM winging its way across to you right now. Cheers Ben

Sorry for the delay in getting these pics up! Photobucket is finally working for me, so here we go.... Sat night; Ben, James and myself stay on at Area52 to start pulling the front apart as a dry/dummy run for out trip up to Wigan on Tues. The idea was to get a good undestanding of what is needed to swap all the front panels over. Knowing how it all comes apart means things should (hmmm..... should!) go much easier for us when we come to do the swap for real. Getting started with the front panel: Before long we'd sussed out wing removal and front panel (and which tools worked best & where) Looking sorry for itself While putting it all back together, I sneak a different grille on that PF Chris had left at the unit. It fitted pretty well! Ben didn't approve Jed demanded it be removed.....he likes it but knows there is something better awaiting this car. Jed always knows best! Kinda looks Eastern Bloc! Back to being a Volvo Next up - that trip!

Tuesday morning and Ben arrives bright & early outside my place. Jed is eager to get going.... He has the back seat all to himself lucky thing! Not content with having his own seat, as soon as we get moving he decides Bens lap is where he wants to spend the rest of the 3hrs in the car! Maybe its because he is nearer the snacks & supplies?? Not much retro spotting to report on the journey - but the one that we did see was rather lovely! Weather was getting worse by the minute We get to Wigan where we start pulling apart the 244 - the wings are pretty rotten but we take them anyway because the new lights won't fit otherwise. Another set will be sourced whenever we can find some (although there is a plan B if all else fails!) The yard acutually looks quite clean/neat in these photos, but every EVERY single bit of slab rocked when you stood on it sending a mass of oily, dirty, stinky foul water all over your legs, tools.....and Jed! Ben gets started on the 240 While I tackle the 244 Now this is where the weather got really bad, we all got SOAKED and then, just when we couldn't get any wetter, we discovered that the lights weren't complete, the bonnet was jammed shut and the car wouldn't start. Due to the weather and the following fiasco where EVERYTHING that could go wrong....did....I forgot to get any more photos of the progress, the tw@t of an AA man etc..... I did, however, snap this on the way home. A very long and frustrating day, some epic sagas, some incredibly hospitable and lovely people we met on the way home (a whole other story in itself!) but we made it back under Volvo power despite everything. That last photo really makes me smile. The trials and tribulations all behind us....and all now part of what was, in hindsight, an awesome day to be honest. RR roadtrips at their very best!

Bruce, in balance.. I think I met three nice people (girl in the chippy was friendly, though it may have been because I was buying stuff and she made such a stark comparison to the guy in the yard) and two bumheads.. That actually just about puts the roadtrip onto a positive even before the car is taken into consideration ;D Thanks for getting the pics up You're right, a RR roadtrip at its finest; it would almost have been dull if it all went to plan ;D

Ahhhh.........well all I can say its deff improved in the looks dept since I last saw it......but I seem to recall a boot spoiler on it which I quite liked! If I remember correctly, the spoiler was from a Pug 405. Joe, the owner before me and after Si took it off and welded up the holes in the bootlid I think I prefer it without, especially with the look I'm aiming for. It did look pretty cool when the car was silver though

No, I agree that a rear spoiler would not look great to the style you are planning. Also, if you're going to paint the car anyway, I would change the bootlid to the older model too... I have always disliked the bootlid on the 1986-> models... It is too curvy for the car, looks like someone have closed it over an overloaded boot, and the opening button are hideous...of course, that is just my personal opinion.
