I've done a bit of searching and can't find much info on these engines so thought you peeps might be able to help. I've read that the 4.0 v6 ford engines (as seen in Ford explorers) is a derivative of the cologne engine. So I was wondering are these engines any good? Do they fit where a 2.8/2.9 would fit? Are they tuneable? Just another option for the Qwertina I suppose. Some pictures for your trouble:

They're decent engines, did a fair bit of research into fitting one in my 100e. Like normal Colognes they respond well to a couple of turbos.

the 4 litres not a bad engine as stock, but unless your gonna tune it and want to start with the biggest cc possible you might as well stick with the 2.9 24v over here, its cheaper and easier to get parts for than the 4 litre, and if you want a big capacity lump a yank V8 is probably a better bet than the 4 litre V6 unless you really have to use one for space or gearbox reasons.
Quite a few of the euro 4x4 lads use the explorer gearbox with the 24v 2.9 bolted on the front as its a better engine in the lada 4x4's.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

ginetta use a 3.5l ford v6 in there gt4 cars, over 300bhp by using an aftermarket ECU and not much else extra, all standard internals for reliability, and i think they are alloy, not sure what they come from though.

Duratech V6 (basically) known as the Ford cyclone.... supposed to power pretty much the whole range, but has been started in the van range over there, Ford Taurus i think it is. Mated to a six speed box....
I worked on one of the ginetta's in the G50 cup, nice engine (to look at, as its pretty much off limits!) and makes those G50's go very well!
<edit> Oh yeah, and they do an "ecoboost" version.... twin turbo from standard FTW!

yeah they weigh sod all so go very well and are pretty damn competitive, i got my zetec engine from them with less than 2k miles on it ;D
the engines they use are crate motors though so I'm not sure how available they are over here, and their 6-speeder is sequential too.
if you had the money they can probably supply an engine.

You can get bore & stoke kits for the UK colognes to go up as far as 3.7 litres, maybe more, I assume they use US production cranks and some machining.
The problem with the Explorer 4.0 V6 is IIRC one bank has its cam drive at the back which will make for clearance issues to the bulkhead when fitting one to a UK Ford.

Ages ago I stumbled across a website for a guy who had put a 4.0 explorer engine in his XR4x4 and then turbo charged it using a turbotechnics kit. Put out good power IIRC.
I'll see if I can find any info.

"Colognes" are not designed in Cologne. They were and are designed in Dearborn, MI, right from the beginning when they started out as industrial V4's in the 50's, and got used by Ford-Koln and then Saab. They are called "Colognes" because they are manufactured in Cologne.
The Cologne family, which is still in production, has been around longer in continuous manufacture than the Chevrolet Small Block V8.
The Ford Explorer 4.0L came in two variants: Cam in block and SOHC. The Cam in block version is like the standand Colognes which went before it: 1 cam in the center of the 60-deg V6. It used pushrods and so forth.
The later SOHC version has a cam top-side of each head. Had a timing chain case in front and in back, one for each head.
The SOHC 4.0L is currently the base motor V6 for the Ford Mustang. Rated around 210HP, 210 TQ in NA form.
A Cosworth version of the Cologne, called the FB, was developed for the 2.9L 24v Cos Granny, and in other displacements for racing. Most development on the racing FB was never put into production, or really caught fire for racing either.
My personal favorite Cologne is the Weslake 2.9L alloy-headed version, such as used in my 1972 Ford-France werkes Tour de France FIA Group 2 Capri. (Picture in my avatar.) It was truly the height of all Cologne evil. Up to 350HP in final form.... I will always cherish Sir Harry and staff's genius.

I thought I did that a couple years back, mate. Sorry if not. Perhaps I'll start a separate thread sometime rather than threadjack this one.

Ah seems as if my next question has been answered. I was Gunna ask whether its possible to use the 24v heads in place of the 12v one's but with the timing chain setup at each end i'm guessing not.
