I know, i know, its another 'which engine and box combo can i fit in me car thread' but hey, when needs be i feel i can look to you all for help... I use my car as a daily and just recently she's been playing up, the carb, the valves, the heating system etc... I just want to jump in her and enjoy her awsomeness. So what i'm asking is what inline 4, FUEL INJECTED (basic prefered), 1400-2000cc engine and box combo can i drop in there for much much much cheapness and limited hassle? Here she is, you can see why i want to just get in and drive...  |

(Sorry don't know the engine codes) Mazda MX5? ^^BP series. I have also heard talk of Toyota 4AGE and Nissan SR20 conversions but can't find any real world documentation. |

They seem to be expensive though :/ I'm really after buying the whole car so i know i've got eveything to make it work you see...

Sierra 2 litre twin cam? You can pick them up for pennies and I think they're rather good....
5 speed boxes too.

Stick an xflow in it.....  How about a 1600zetec from a ZetecS. You could use a xflow 4spd 'box or a type9 5spd. Its a well documented conversion (not specifically the 1600, but I don't believe theres any differences to the 2lt) and it'll leave you with all the kit you need to upgrade to 1800/2lt power at a later date. Not quite a case of buying a donor and having all the bits you need, but its all off the shelf. |

What about a 1.6 Zetec SE (the Yamaha one)? Or a 1.7 but they only came in Pumas and wouldn't be as cheap I dare say. Dunno what gearboxes bolt up for a RWD application (it is RWD isn't it?). Or... how about a 1.8 V6 from a Mazda MX-3?! I'm dying to see someone transplant one of those!  |

problem with those engines, dave and dean, they only bolt up to modern mazda rwd boxes without having to pay for expensive bellhousings. how about a bmw? or rx-7? or some rwd nissan turbo? i believe these have a self contained engine loom too  merc 4 pot? modern diesel turbo? |

What about the vauxhall 2.0 8V jobbie that came in Cavaliers etc? Rtlkyuubi has one in his viva and they are pretty bomb proof and relatively cheap by all accounts!

Vauxhall 1.4L 16 valve, from a Corsa. About 95bhp, all day long. Supposed to bolt up to a Carlton gearbox, so RWD, with a minimum of fuss, although said Carlton box is quite large.
Alternatively, a Rover K series, with an adaptor bell housing and a Type 9.

I keep telling him I've got a Merc V8 in the garage, just needs megasquirting and mating up to a manual box and it'd be great in his Mazda...

See £500 for an engine don't fit into my cheap catorgory!
I'd love a 4age, i loved the one in my MK1a, how do they rwd? Is it a specific box made of ae86 unobtanium or can they be lobbed on summat a whole lot more available (again, read cheap)

£500 for a complete MX5 breaker is not £500 for an engine. Thats £500 for an engine and all the stuff to make it work, plus a ton of stuff you can flog on eBay to offset the costs. MX% bits do well on eBay. A mate has one and has got stuff from all over.
You could just drop a Pinto or whatever in there but it would be a bit curse word.
An MX5 conversion would be the nuts I reckon. Nice engine and its all "family" so it all looks well thought out, integrated thought process and I would imagine give you a better sale value when its time to move the car on and get the next project...
I need to get those wheels off you, theres some more to the fund for the new engine...
