Word up gang, does anyone know if a proper oldskool logbook can be 'redeemed' at the DVLA for a new one? My landcrab has passed the MOT and is now insured, the only thing missing is a disc-o-tax. The logbook i have for it is the proper old skool job with the bit you tear off the bottom and send off, while giving the main part of the doc to the new keeper. I've got the main part, just like if i had bought the crab in 1987. I know these are not valid for anything like buying a taxdisc or keeping a roadside copper happy, but are they good enough to get you a new logbook if you fill in the back and send it off? That is what I have done, so now I am waiting to see if I will get a proper logbook back in my name, or if i will get a virtual V-sign and an instruction to apply for a new one along with a demand for £25. What do you think? Here is the (now MOT'd) crab, just doing a few tinkering jobs on it at the moment before it hits the road!

I think you are ok.... the £25 fee only applies if you have nothing at all as far as I'm aware.... but could be wrong. Be interesting to see what the others say. My father had one of these for a few years same colour (baby puke green) too..... only was a 2200cc 6 pot. Starship mileage and never let him down once!!

I know a chap who was in the same situation, I believe he had to go to his local VRO with the old V5 in order to be issued with a new V5C, but there could have been further complicating circumstances for his problem.
Amazingly, I have found the DVLA can be quite helpful with these sorts of query and recently they have added an option to actually speak to a person to their call tree system when you phone them.

I was under the impression that the old V5s for cars not taxed/SORNed had to be sent back by a certain date a few years ago to get a 'free' V5C. You could try your luck and send it in like in the old days, or possibly go to a VRO (Chester's nearest, I suspect) with the other forms and act clueless if needed. You'll be wanting it changed from P/LG to historic vehicle, as well...

Sadly I won't, as this crab is too young to be tax exempt! So I will have to grit my teeth and pay the £100 for 6 months!

Should be ok with a V5. It's the old buff ones that they question.

Congrats on the MOT! I recall buying a car with an old type V5... can't remember what car... but I just sent off the thing as usual and I got a nice new one back. It wasn't one of the REALLY old buff ones, but it was one of those that should have been replaced with a new type.
I think you'll be reet.

I've bought a fair few motors with old V5's and the logbooks have come just the same as if you'd sent off a V5c. Nice motor ;D

Supposedly the V5 to V5C swap over was done and dusted about 2.5 -3 years back. However in practice I've not yet heard of anyone having a problem swapping.

Ive swapped a few when ive bought old clunkers and never had a problem, send it off as normal and you get a new style V5c back.

Very good, cheers all! Looks like I've just gotta play the waiting game. I'll just carry on tinkering and titvating till the V5 turns up.

are they good enough to get you a new logbook if you fill in the back and send it off? You should be OK, although the DVLA do seem to be getting very funny about logbooks. I'm still awaiting for the V5C for my crab, but it's not unusual to have to wait months for them to sort things out if you haven't got the little green tear off slip. Think I only had the old style logbook for my Riley and did eventually get a V5C for that after a few emails and letters.
