Hi All, I wanted to get some advice on D-SLR's as I've convinced the wifist to buy me one for crimbo (or chip in at least) I used to be very into photography (have got a fully manual 35mm SLR, loadsa lenses, filters etc..) but have been outta the game for quite a while (been rolling a Sony 8mp pocket-cam for ages - don't laugh! It's got a Zeiss lens.. ) Anyway, I need an SLR back in my life and am learning basic potatoshop processing so could use a nod towards what's good & what's bad (bearing in mind I don't have £££'s to spend!) or a least what I should be looking at as a bare minimum!? What camera's / kit do you good people use? Any recommendations? Mods: if this is too far off the mark then my apologies - I've been on a lot of photography sites but wanted to get the advice of my favourite community. Some of the photos taken by people on here are jaw-dropping and I've little interest in photographing anything that isn't RR related Some photographs I particularly like (not mine) by way of thanks: Cheers all ;D HC.

Friend of mine runs a studio, and when I was looking at buying a DSLR a couple of the pro's I spoke to about it reccomended the canon 450D as a good alrounder for a hobbiest to get started with at a reasonable price.

The market has become so competitive now you really can't go wrong whatever your budget is. It's almost become a case of what name you prefer on the namestrap.
If you already have some good lenses I'd get a body they'll work with.
Just watch out for the poor quality kit lenses that come with some of the packages people offer.

Nikkon F mount lenses fitment has been carried through to Nikkon DSLRS, as long as it is F-mount it will work, but probably won't give you any auto autofocus or automatic aperture capabilities.

I will second the suggestion of Mr PopUp. Canon 450D is an awesome camera for the money. I bought one new as my first DSLR and absolutely loved it. The one and only reason I sold it was because I treated myself to a new 5DII a month or so ago because I wanted a full frame camera. The 450D comes with the 18-55is (image stabilised) kit lens which is a cracking piece of kit. Not a pro-lens but the quality is amazing and I dare you to fault the IQ compared to any other kit lens in the price bracket. Ratters bought a 450D after I'd recommended it to him and he loves it to bits, hasn't looked back and is always telling me how glad he is that he bought one. His photos are amazing! Charlatan1 (Morgs) bought my 450D off me and also loves it to bits. The older 400D model can be bought cheaper but the kit lens (18-55 non-is) is nowhere near as good....and you lose out on things like having a smaller screen, slwoer processor/buffer, no live view etc.... I can't sing the praises of the 450D enough! I'm thinking of eventually getting another one as a back-up to my 5DII so that I can have the crop sensor if I feel the need. Value for money wise it's the best thing out there that I've seen and I did spend a lot of time researching and trying different cameras out. Whichever you choose, Nikon or Canon will always be your best bet long term because they have the biggest range of lenses. As MWF says, once you have a few lenses in your kit bag it gets expensive to change to a different manufacturer. When I changed to the 5DII, I got to keep my fave lenses and move them over onto the new body. Have some car & RR shots - all taken with my lovely 450D: Hotwire's car last Autumn when I was looking after it Retro Show @ Santa Pod 09 (ALBUM HERE)RR Gathering 09 (ALBUM HERE)Retro Action & Sportscar Day @ Castle Combe 09 (ALBUM HERE)Summer Slam 09 @ Ace Cafe (ALBUM HERE)

I've got a 350D, but am currently hankering after a 500D 'cos I want to try a bit of lens-swapping HD video action.
