i need to cobble some parts of a gear linkage
the way id like to do it means using some stainless bits and mild
i have a gas mig with mild steel wire , and a arc with both kinds of rods
which would be best and will the weld be man enough ? or is it a no no

It's fine to weld mild steel and stainless together with normal ms wire....but the weld won't be stainless obviously. Just weld it as you would two pieces of mild making sure you get good penetration and there won't be any problems.

If your talking about exhausts then yeah it should be ok! Stainless and mild steel melt at different temperatures and if you get Stainless to hot it makes it brittle, the same applies to MS!!(work hardening/ anealing) Never use stainless to repair a car structure (high load areas) see above!

You can use SS mig wire to weld stainless to mild steel as well.
