Well I'm 36 this year and given how much sherry I drink I recon that probably makes me midlife so it's time for a mid life crisis. This of course means buying a porsche. Because I'll be spending so much money on an an expensive toupe I can't afford a 911 so fancy a 928 instead. I've got say - 3 grandish to spend and will be looking at S1's and S2's as they're cheaper. The big questions is, is a 928 do-able for 3 grandish or will I be letting myself into a world of pain, anguish and fear? My next door neighbour ran one of these as a daily for years - and gave him a hand when got stuck....and he did regularly. It cost him an arm and a leg to run, engine spares were a nightmare pricewise. Must admit though when it was up and running it was one of the best cars i´ve ever driven. Service history is the magic word methinks...  |

don't think its the kinda car you want to searching out the cheapest example off save up until you can get a great example I know but it's either get a cheapish one or don't get one at all as I can't justify the 5-6 grand for a good s2. There was a nice one for sale with FSH on pistonheads for 3 grand but it had 180k on it. The parts costs terrify me as I know anything you need to get direct from porsche is a fortune. |

well go look at a few , you might find a good one , or one with scruffy bodywork that runs well
just be aware it wont be cheap to fix if it goes wrong

get a decent runner with rust, and learn to weld  seriously though if you buy cheap, it will cost you a fortune unless your very lucky. |

bdizzle, that tg 928 is what I'm worried about!
I had a look through eurocarparts and service items are okay priced.
Discs, £50 each, pads, £30 a set, oil filter £12.
.
.
Then I spotted the front suspension arm. £500+!

Try the Porsche Club Forum, you'll have to sign up (for free) to see anything. There's not much activity under the 928 section, but the 944 section is very active, and a really great friendly helpful bunch, and of course they'll know 928s too! TBH with £3k going, a 944 would be a better bet, plus of course allow for a reserve in case of expensive repairs! Ours slipped it's cam belt, which with parts prices for the HG set etc, plus sorting out bent valves was well on the wrong side of £500, doing most of the work myself  Then a month later, it totalled the engine on the M2, and that was that, straight to eBay  |

I like both 924 and 944's especially the later S2 944's however the 928 is currently top of my want lists as I love v8's and think it's the best looker of that era of Porsches. |
