ok, i have been doing some research and have found out some good info for the conversion.
to use a XE with a ford type 9 box. i need certain bits from SBD, gave them a call and the guy was very helpful and explained some things to me. parts needed to mate a type 9 to an xe are:
bell housing 7 degree - 154.52 release arm - 32.85 fulcrum pin - 3.96 release bearing - 23.44 spigot bearing - 8.50 a standard XE clutch cover to suit flywheel ( flat or pot) 138.06 and a special 1" x 23 spline clutch plate - 126.33 ( uprated ones available) and a 7 degree manifold for twin 45's is - 94.00
just some useful info for reference.

yeh to confirm its a B, 2 inches wider then the chevette. Hmmm . I was always under the impression that if one was to fit the B axle then the wheels would stick out in cartoony Carlos Fandango proportions . But looking at yours , they look fine and dandy to me ! ^ Looking at that it looks like you've got , what , another inch to spare maybe ? Granted , that means you might be only looking at a 6 or 6.5" wheel - give or take offsets - but it's certainly not going to make you reach for the bolt-on arches just yet ! Soooooo why aren't more people using the B axle ? I know the A is supposed to be good for 200bhp ( is it really ? ) but if you pinched a B off a Manta Gte for example then surely it should be capable of handling a bit of power - or am I missing something ? Anyway , didn't mean to turn your thread into an axle debate , keep up the good work man

debate away, i don't mind, the wheels fitted are the standard alloys, so really skinny and only 155 wide tyres. not sure on the rim width. yeh theres maybe another inch there, i havent got drums on yet, so have to take that into consideration as well. but thats maybe another inch max. but I'm sure i can get a set of 13" x 6 revolutions with a high offset so they will fit under, going to have to measure the space i have and work out my off set that i need. and no idea why people don't use the manta b axle, dertimed to make it fit tho

well, you're progressing well! and gathering the parts at a good rate too! i don't think i've heard anyone say the 'b' axle doesn't fit, just that it makes things tight! only problem i foresee is that you will have to have a play with wheels to find a good offset to tuck them in, especially if you go wider than your 155's on 5 and half rims! which you would really have to do with the extra grunt under the bonnet. that would probably mean you would end up with totally different offsets on your front to back wheels, but you can always buy new wheels in pairs anyway... do the wheels clear the arches now if you heave down on the back end? anyway, sure theres a few of us want to see you complete this mate, now get that axle painted!

Nice car mate The Manta axle was originally designed to take less than 100 bhp so it's pushed at over 130. I had a mancona with a diff and 120 bhp.. slippy diff at a cost of 500 quid and a few doughnuts later .... bang rebuilt it at a cost of 300 quid and i won't use it as i will flog it on and go for an atlas

so your saying the manta axle is still to weak? hmmmm
I was going to run english originally, but this manta one came up very cheap and very local, so I couldnt say no!
and thanks for the comments guys, hoppefully it wont be to long befor its done, and I hope to get to a few meets this year.
and yeh about the wheels, I'm looking at new revolutions, which you can specify the offset. so I will probably end up running front and back different. I need to get the drums assembled and work out how much space I have.
things still to buy.
Clutch goodies. custom propshaft megajolt kit engine mounts wheels brakes suspension inlet and exhaust manifolds
lol not much then!

ok i have done alot of work to this, but keep forgetting to update this thread. alot of pics: Flywheel on, with ARP's Clutch also on and aligned. so just to keep me busy i rebuild the carbs. not many pics as i couldnt be arsed, but i had all the bits layed out on paper and numbered lol. and they were very clean inside, and fitted all new gaskets. as i don't think i will ever find a manta big wing sump. i have decided to make my own from a 8v steel sump. so to get a rough idea and shape, i have made it out of card first, very rough. but i think it has come out alright. Can ya guess what it is yet, nice pile of bits and mocked up sort off lol.
