www.motuk.co.uk/manual_220.htmShould be an advisory unless there is excessive free play in the rack. I recommend bookmarking that site, always comes in useful to me!

On a 2nd look, that guide contradicts itself In one place it says the owner should be advised, and further on it gives it as a reason for failure. Sorry for the duff info!

The dust covers if split are an advisory [the sort on track rod end ball joints], not the rack gaiters which if split are a fail. To be fair to Adam VOSA wording isn't always that straightforward.

A split steering rack gaiter will result in an MOT fail I'm afraid. Yup - my wife's car recently failed on that.

well at least it's cheap £7 for a pair from the Halfords and thats before trade discount ;D although cheap, you have to get the joint off to do them. if you get a bmw one or secondhand bmw one, then you can simply remove the rack end from the rack, pull the old one off to the inside and slip the new one on with very little fuss. no messing with the tracking. like, it takes 10 mins with the right one
