There must be a thread for this on here somewhere but I couldn't find it, and given that people here are probably less likely to follow the norm of having 'a small practical car, with a small engine that you can rag around in' - it would be nice to see what you did go for... Mine for instance was a k-reg five door Astra, given to me by my girlfriends dad. It had no tax or MOT, it was full of mould and every part of it was broken. On the test day, despite vigourous cleaning, the instructor would only get in it if he could sit on a plastic bag. I think he passed me becuase he felt sorry for me, or knew that I wouldn't even think of driving it on the road...how wrong he was! That afternoon I picked up some friends and we headed to the only place I could think of...Barry Island! It was mental, I had been waiting years to be able to drive and this new feeling of freedom was truly awesome. That evening on the return journey I was pulled over by some rozzers who found it very halarious that I had only passed that very morning. Convinced that I wasn't some gutter-snake street yob they let me go off... 'put-putting' into the sunset. A few months later it was sold to some kids for racing! The end.

a wibblepoo-brown Austin Metro, 998 cc on an E-plate. I wanted a Mk1 Golf, but my dad, who was lending me the money, said no . I filled the boot with hi-fi speakers, painted the bumpers and wheels green (!!) and drove it until it completely died. Got ÂŁ15 from a scrapper for it. Got a Mk 1 now though, so all's well that ends well...

My first car was a Mk2 Escort 1.1 Popular 4-door in a dark reddy-brown I had to borrow a car for my test as mine didn't have headrests (apparently a requirement for the examiner to get in it) I unfortunately killed it in a fit of 17 year old stupidity (in a supermarket carpark ) so bought a 1.3L 2-door in beige that was the first car I ever 'modified' (slam & RS rims) then when the tired old 1.3 xflow expired I fitted a 1.6 from a 'tina 1600E we'd broken up. Funny, this was only 8-9 years ago yet a 17 year old could afford a t&t'd 2-door mk2 Escort - I doubt I could afford one now! We broke & weighed in two 4-doors & a 1600E, seems mental now! I actually had 4 Mk2's in a row before my tastes started to diversify, although I've still got the fourth ;D HC.

white G reg 3 door K10 micra - hillariously christened by my college mates as 'the poofmobile' due to it being registered G676 PFM - was a tidy 2 owner motor when I got it, something like 76k on the clock, brand spanking genuine clutch in it just before it was part ex'd for a red K11 (I know it was px'd as the ex owner flagged me down a few weeks after passing my test!)
crashed it into a roadsign at the end of a sliproad showing off (within 2 weeks!), pushed the bonnet back over the scuttle, bent the bumper, and all the steering & suspension arms on one side - got a telling off for that, and luckily pops fixed it, as hadn't a clue back then
lasted a fair few years of ragging the tits off it, handbraking in carparks, racing round on the ice at the local lakes, scaring most of my fellow 6th formers - kept it at home all through uni, and it fired up every time I was home - my mate had it in the end for the engine - as the shell was pretty rotten
I'd LOVE another one - so watch out RTLKyuubi!!

Skoda Rapid 130. I've misplaced the only photo I have of it, but when it turns up I'll scan it in for posterity. I loved it. Did my first cylinder head gasket, my first engine removal when the spigot bearing went, my first suspension rebuild... I did so much work on that car! Wish I still had it.

When I passed my test in 1989 I had a 1978 Vauxhall Chevette GLS which I loved! It had the standard Rostyles, chrome trim, vinyl & velour interior etc....I really wish I could have it back but alas it's long gone! I had so many great adventures in it, I went all over the country camping and it was such a wonderful car. If I had one the same, I'd roll it as standard I reckon.

1978 Mk2 Escort 1.3L estate in Venetian red, modified with a furry steering wheel cover,Stylistick stripes and some Paddy Hopkirk "Flash Harry" wheeltrims ;D Took my test in it.It had a recent recon motor and the idle speed was about 1200rpm as it loosened off.The examiner thought it was a deliberate ploy to ease setting off but passed me anyway! That was the first of 6 MK2's,four of of em in Venetian red.Best one was a silver 1600 Sport, learn't most of what i know about cars when i rebuilt that one. Happy days ...

first car i had legally after passing my test was a mk2 escort estate with 1600 sport running gear in it. MTW 419P, bit like triggers broom it had 2 reshells and pretty much everything changed over the next three years, followed it up with an Australian Ford Fairmont GT coupé with a 460ci big block in it, that was a culture shock.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

this was mine: Volvo 480ES 2.0 met a undignified end on the roundabout armco about 600yards from my parents road, due to oil on the road, curse word tyres but mostly due to 17yr old driver was replaced by the Blue Meanie (as she only gave No as an answer!) that car refused to die! (flew remarkably well too, very level in the air ) xXx

First ever car was a 1979 Mini Clubman I bought from the garage I worked at on Saturdays and school holidays. That was when I was 13! Done the clutch, service and brakes after school and stuff. Sold it to the lady up the road who had just passed her test!
Next car was a Talbot Sunbeam saloonstock, when I was 16. Rebuilt it as a Vauxhall Shovit then wrecked it by hassling a big fish, LOL! Was third in the track points when I passed my road test!
First car on the road was a Red Mini with a gold roof. Bought it from a Policewoman, never got stopped when I drove it.
