Ive watched them all and agree with whats been said if I watch them now I turn the sound down. I think overhallin was the best but the last series wasent as good I belive chip directed it. The onle thing I don't like is the way every thing seems to come out of a crate where people over here tend to make what they have fit and work, but its better than watching x-factor etc. Just need to get Chip in the UK! I'm putting the lottery on tomorrow and if I clean up I'll employ mr Chip Foose's skills and see what he can do with this.

I used to watch American Hotrod and wondered how they ever stayed in buisiness!?! Boyd just seemed to run the place badly, doing everything at the last minute and skimping on stuff like the paint shop and Dwayne had all the people management skills of my . Their staff seemed fairly lazy too.

dissing aside, they have some very talented staff, and buyers with a LOT of cash to throw at things. They made a lot of great cars (not iconic) but I don't think I saw one I wouldn't (as a mardy cynical git) be really proud of owning.
Boyd always threw stupid deadlines on them, and moaned when they wouldn't work over the weekend and til silly oclock to get stuff done, which isn't exactly ideal, but I reckon most of the employees ended up "ok" out of the deal. I know I would work 10 hour days, every day of the week at that place. Roy was an absolute star!

Yeah Roy was cool, did you see the one where he fell asleep at his bench, and then a few minutes later woke up and just carried on where he left off as though nothing had happened, it was class, but a proper old school tradesman though

Yeah Roy was cool, did you see the one where he fell asleep at his bench, and then a few minutes later woke up and just carried on where he left off as though nothing had happened, it was class, but a proper old school tradesman though He was an awkard old curse word, especially with bluebear, but you could tell he was genuinely trying to help people learn. If I was a skilled as him when I'm as old as him, I'd be a lot more grumpy and awkward. The guys they occasionally farm bonnet making out to (a father and 2 sons, I forget the names) seem to do a hell of a lot of work, in no time at all. Between the nonsense for TV, there is some real skilled work that gets glossed over.

Anyone ever watch The Garage on Discovery? Good for a grin sometimes. I also like this. It makes me feel skilled and professional! Kit car crisis upsets me, because the bloke seems so offended by every hurdle. Rather than "oh no, I'm building a bike engined kit car with the help and funding of a tv program" every time he comes across an issue he just gives up. "Well, these bell housings don't fit (he meant brake disk bells) it's all over, I've had it" after he measured the centre bore of his disks slightly too small, then rather than "measure it properly and get them turned out" he sent the lot back to the manufacturers for them to just sort it. On the other hand, Mark Evans though (a "such and such" is born), is brilliant. He's no expert (but explains things well enough so that most people can have a go, keeps his enthusiasm up and is really genuinely likeable. he's made landrovers, bikes, cobras, MGs and trikes and every time It's been worth watching every minute of!

Boyd Coddington doesn`t come across very well in the series but he is (was) one of the top hot rod builders even before the TV thing came along. I like Foose but most of his cars are very alike but he has great design and practical skills. I watch all of these programmes if there is nowt else to watch which is normally every day. Even "Wrecks to Riches" and that programme with the Asian guys is watchable as they all have talent but sometimes the ideas are a bit strange. Discovery Turbo FTW !

it allways amazes me how much filler was used at boyd's & how no one ever knocked dwyanes teeth down his throat i'll never know. not surprised most of the staff left boyd's as they where tret worse then pondlife. like wrecks to riches some great muscle cars & overhaulin second.

I ve watched every one I think... They are good entertainment but they are a bit mind numbing... Its duane and boyd, realy hate the attitude problem. I think duane has moved back to mid america somewhere and isnt involved with rods (last I heard) and bluebear is working for another of boyds cast offs who runs a respectible rod shop somewhere in socal... (iirc) sorry this is a bit long but its what ive read here: www.vcvc.org/ubb/Forum1/HTML/002766.htmlJust in case anyone is interested, here are some comments on the subject by Jimmy Smith from a website called jalopyjournal.com.......... O.k I have seen people harping on Blue Bear for the last few weeks and biting my tongue. It is know time to set the record straight and give some background on the infamous Blue Bear. What some people don't know about Blue Bear was he was showing up at Boyds shop when he was still in High school, wanting to learn how to build "hot rods" we all gave him the "get the [censored] out of here kid". He kept showing up, his persistence paid off. Eventually I taught Blue Bear how to Tig weld, fit tubes, make templates, basic fabrication skills. He graduated from high school and started working full time, the kid was actually doing it! Eventually like Blue Bear, Boyd and myself had a difference of opinions I ended up quitting and starting my own shop (circle city hot rods). Blue Bear kept at it and developed a taste for simpler more traditional style cars. (he said my coupe was a big influence). Blue Bear had a car that he bought (the model a) with his own money, and he scavenged and saved for the rest of his parts. Boyd comes along and decides to do the rat rod build-off. And this is were the problems start coming in. Blue Bear has his vision of how he wants to build his car, He has been researching reading the old mags, and paying attention to traditional cars. I don't know about you guys, but when I envision a project that I have been thinking about for years I stick to my vision. Blue Bear didnt want to change his vision, I for one think that is cool. Another thing that you guys don't see is the behind the scenes stuff, You just see the drama that the Discovery guys show you. I am not trying to brag, but I have been building hot rods for a pretty long time now, and I know the difference between an unsafe ****box and a decently built car. Blue Bears car was a pretty nice car. It was probably built better then most of the people that are talking [censored] on him on this board could build. I also suspect that you guys don't know of all the hours that he put in working for Boyd, not getting a cent of overtime. Or how he was sick of building plastic kit cars. Or how American Hot Rod portrayed him as being the village idiot. Yes, Blue Bear works for me now, I wouldnt hire someone that couldnt do the job or that built unsafe cars. The people that know me on this board know the kind of cars we build, and the quality I expect. I am really pleased with the fact that Blue Bear and I have come full circle, he is now able to build the style of cars he likes, in a better atmosphere. I personally invite any of you to come to my shop anytime to see the real Blue Bear. Sorry about the rant, but I felt I had to set the record straight.
Jimmy White
P.s. don't think Blue Bear has some kind of dirt on me, and I have to stick up for him, he is a good kid that just wants to build real hot rods.

He's actually one of the head Veterinarians fro the RSPCA. I was watching Panorama one night on the subject of dog inbreeding (as you do), and then suddenly he popped up as an expert opposing it!!!! But yeah, his 'Is Born' programmes are endlesly watchable.

You have to watch all these shows with a pinch of salt though, bit of drama for effect. Overhaulin' is the pick of the bunch - that's 7 days and nights of work to produce those cars without slapping filler over rust and not a neon fishtank in sight (pimp my ride UK, the shame). Foose is a legend and a massively talented group of people working alongside him too. The Overlord (his own pickup truck) was done by the crew of the show behind his back whilst they were making the TV show car as well so they must have been putting ridiculous hours in for it.
(On a side note as nice as AJ is to look at she has to be the worst female presenter on TV and really gets on my nerves!)

It'd be wrong to base your entire opinion of Boyd on a TV show. TV needs drama, suspense and jeopardy...cars alone don't quite have enough interest to pull in a big enough audience so rows, deadlines and various characters are added to the package. Growing up reading American rod mags Foose and Boyd were just names associated with the cool cars I saw and that's still a good way to see them. They all have an important place in hot rodding's history and you shouldn't really let what you see in a show tell you the whole story. If you want to judge people on nothing more than you see on TV (or rather the version that comes after the edit is complete) then Big Brother is the show for you, if you want to look at the skills of a car builder then the only place to see the results is in the cars they build. Years ago Street Machine ran a picture of a guy at a car show wearing a T-Shirt that said 'No man with a good car needs to be justified' - that didn't make a great deal of sense at the time, but seems relevant here.

That'll have been a Ministry 'Jesus Built My Hotrod' shirt then. I had one of those in about 1992!!

just started watching Am Hotrod for the very first time, its quite inspiring, but i just can't understand why bluebear wasn't fired after like 5 minutes, I just want to punch him. I would LOVE a workshop like that. I guess realestate doesn't cost anything like what it does over here

Pretty mutch watched em all, they are endlessly repeated on cable though the night ;D Roy was THE man boy i'd have loved to have worked with the old fart for a while, just in the hope some of the skill would have worn off onto me I already have the moany old fart bit down to a tee just need the skills to match ;D I thought him and Lee were the perfect pair, the grumpy old git and the mad a hatter funster, they were just the odd couple. YBH when bluebear went i stopped watching for a while cos i thought waht boyd did was well out of order but that's TV i guess, i allways though he was related or sumink to Boyd for some reason ? TBH i'd rather watch mark Evans and I do repeatedly, probably the English way he presents TBH i'm more a fan of curse word jokes than hyped up tension and deadlines, I alwways think ice road truckers and swords ect would be better if they wernt hyped up as much but I guess it works for the majoraty of the morons who watch and it give me sumink to maon about
