i have a old polo that has a intermitant fuel gauge , the sender is a simple effort thats just earthed and sends a ohms reading to the gauge cluster
now ive tested the sender and its still giving a reading when the gauge isnt working
the wiring harness still has a reading when the gauge is duff
decent working second clusters are hard to find , so i was thinking could i hardwire the back of the gauge (its just 2 terminals ) to earth and to the sender to bypass the cluster ? or might it run through a stabilser circuit to steady the gauge or something ?
any ideas ?

No reason why not!
I guess you mean that that it's wired into a circuit board thingy on the back of the cluster?
Have you tried testing from the terminals on the instrument cluster where the loom plugs in across to each gauge terminal?
There might be a broken track in the plastic/copper sheet thing that they usually have? (haven't acutally seen a Polo one, just going on how they are generally)
You could then add a wire or two from the plug terminal to the gauge.

It must have a stabilser smewhere or the needle would be all over the place when driving.
Unplug the clocks and see if you still have 12v across the terminals from the sender.
Plug them back in, Take the clocks to bits and see if you have 10v (Stabilisers usually stabilise to 10v) where the dial is powered (expect v thin uncoated wires). This'll then tell you which bit is fubar.

right yeah i know where the stabiliser is
so if i hardwire it one side to the stabilser @10v or whatever and the other side the ohms signal from the tank then it should work by bypassing the cluster tracks etc?
