As was hinted at in the Doughnut meet thread, yes, SWMBO is expecting our first Speedybump, I found out the morning after the RR Awards night, its going to mean loads of changes for us and my crazy 50 events a year lifestyle!
First up the fast and fun daily was swapped, out went the Mk2 GTI as its a bit too small for us as it is, the heater is rubbish and the safety cell consists of a soft patch on the top of the steering wheel to headbutt in a crash.
In its place a very bland and dependable 2001 Passat, its fast enough, nice and warm and safer for SWMBO to pootle round in.
The house goes on the market in the next week and the hunt for a bigger place with parking for four cars begins, garage essential
The first question I was asked by both sets of parents was "which car are you going to sell then?" none of them was the response from both of us, but we needed to adapt both the air-cooleds, with the Speedybump getting bigger static belts in the front of Beetle and Camper and nothing in the back is not good so I did a bit of shopping around and with a nice discount managed to pick up six belts so we can keep using the retros, two in the front of each and a single three point in the back. This afternoon was spent in the Camper, the fronts were nice and easy being a straight swap.
We'll be road testing them on the way to Wheels Day the rear of the Camper proved more tricky, the belts need to fit in around the rock'n'roll bed and camping interior, luckily VW were savvy towards safety and had fitted lap belts in the rear already and a point for a three point belt to bolt in at shoulder level (forward thinking in 1971!) the only downside....the third point needed to be bolted down the side of the set cushion on the wheel arch, but this is behind the bed base so several hours spanner and grazed knuckles and its all in. As we asked in the other thread, "where do you put a cot in a camper?" We've got a cab bunk, its a canvas hammock that came new with the van in '71, just needs a fresh piece of material and we've got a three berth Camper, its similar to this one, but without the extra cushions
The Beetle is next, again the fronts should be easy, the rear apparently has the fixing points behind the headlining
So thats it really, but to keep this within RR territory, lets have some retro pedal cars and pushchairs to tempt Kim with ;D
