I finally have a sweet running engine. Valve clearances are done, timing and carbs checked and adjusted, fluids changed, etc. but now I have one large hurdle. The electrics.
Basically, nothing seems to really work. Indicators don't work, hazards don't, horn doesn't (I think that's an earthing fault) (when the stalk is pressed, the handbrake light goes out...), and the fuel gauge has a mind of its own (it either works or it doesn't) (I'm sure the temp gauge did but I'm not running a dual gauge).
Overheating problem has also been put down to the fan not working (showing 3-7v at the connector and the motor not turning when the thermoswitch has been shorted out...).
Out of the electrics, the centre light works, the outer lights work (bar the flashing beams (not an MOT failure though (still work if the stalk is pushed forward). although the rears lights all come on if the sidelights are on with the indicators also coming on (and the RHS indicator staying on the dash dimly if the lights are on).
Whilst I'm sure there's more to it than the stabiliser I reckon the stabiliser is not helping things. However, nowhere seems to say where it is located, but it tells you on how to see whether it is working or not!
So my question to you is where is the voltage stabiliser on a '79 BGT? If it is at fault I'll probably go to a modern solid state thingymajig.
So far I've changed the earth strap which seems to have made the gauges a little better (but that could have been coincidence).
Electrics? Who'd have 'em?
