It's good stuff. I painted my girlfriend's bike with it - a better finish and 1/4 the price of powdercoat, and almost as tough. No metallics though, and somewhat limited colour choice.

It's a right pain in the to do though. I think I did more wetsanding on that bike than I did painting my mate's Golf!

I've just completed my third coat of rollering my Cortina yesterday with synthetic paint. I've had to do a fair bit of sanding between coats so far and I know i've got a whole lot more to do at the weekend when this last coat is properly dry. I can't see mysel getting results like that, but i'll let you know if I do.

^^ pete is synthetic suitable ? i know we used to use it on old lorrys and cheap stuff at work , you couldnt polish it if you loused up

I hope i can get a bit of a shine out of it. I went to Kett auto paints to get some 2k for it as I have a compressor but they wouldn't sell it to me as they said it was too dangerous for use at home, unless I get full breathing equipment which they could supply for £300. The fella then said that this synthetic stuff should be OK, not as good as 2K but will do the job and is safe so I just took his word for it. More orange peel than an orange at the minute, but i'll get sanding at the weekend.

Just my 2p....
I came across Rustoleum by accident,as my supplier doesnt do Hammerite. I hand brushed the large air tanks for my air system. People still wont believe its hand done ! Amazing stuff!
I learnt the 'knack' of brush painting in general from my old man (RIP Dad)working to a 'wet edge'(oo er!) is one thing he taught me. . Ive found with the Rustoleum its best to use a good quality brush (one that has been 'broken in ' after a few previous jobs is better).Good prepping and NOT TOUCHING the surface before paint is a must. I've only painted small items,and Ive always done them in the boiler house at work ,where I can hang them from the pipes on wire or rope so that they can be turned as you paint ,and left to dry without handling.(practice painting and how the strokes will go on BEFORE EVEN OPENING THE TIN !) The temp in there is I reckon about 40 degrees,which helps the paint to lay on nicely. Sorry to ramble ,just my little tips..!

whats this wet edge technique then? id like to learn proper brush painting skills but theres little info out there

I think it is used for spraying as well,but don't know much about spraying!basically it means that whatever you are painting make sure that you are always brushing on paint following the last few strokes . ie don't paint a panel partly then go off for a cuppa,cos when you come back the paint you have just put on will have skinned a bit ,not allowing the next strokes to flow into it.So don't paint a panel in one area then start somewhere else on the panel .Another trick is to lightly stroke the brush over the wet paint to level it out as you go ,this way you can get all the strokes in one direction. Not really a good explanation ,but hope it helps
!Rustoleum ,as far as I can gather has probably got a chemical in it that allows it to level out more as it dries,therefore giving a flatter top 'skin',hence the shine.

when i brush it , i get a decent amount on and brush it well , up and down then side to side and corner to corner so its spread evenly ....then lastly a gentle glide over the paint with the wieght of the brush

bit of white spirit helps , especialy when the tins getting low it seems to thicken up

Yep ,I always try to use a new tin,cos old stuff gets thick.

International Brightside for me. It's polyurethane based and gives a really good shine straight from the tin. They have their own thinner too which gives the paint more time to settle before drying.

I't a marine paint so comes from chandlerys. I'm sure I heard of someone getting some in the one in Felixstowe which isn't that far from you.

Really?! The whole purpose of me using it was so that I could add paint after various repairs. I guess yet another paint job will be on the cards in the next few years then.
