Quick question for the M.O.T minded peeps out there, long story short is mot due soon and I'm skint due to anniversary, babies birthday and general life ect...... 1 of my tyres is a fail, but the spare is like new, so the question is if i swap the spare for the "dodgy" tyre and leave the spare off the car will it fail? i remember someone telling me if the spares "iffy" it can fail but if its not there it will pass??? is this still correct?
cheers bern

Thats my understanding of the rules. As long as the spare you are fitting isnt a space saver of course

My van had no spare at the last test and past and the cars spare has not been searched for in 3 years. All legit Mot's I hasten to add but I'm not 100% on the book definition.

Spare wheel doesn't count. The spare in my old mini was bald and flat, never even got looked at at MOT time.

The condition or presence of the spare tyre definitely isn't part of the MOT. Don't worry about it

If its not there they can't test it and if its not legally obliged to be present it does not need to be there.
Just like reverse lights front fogs ect.
Leave it at home it'll be rite. (as long as your spare ain't a space saver as previously mentioned)

the spare has nothing to do with the mot however you can get nicked by the old bill for a bald spare

The only thing it could fail on is if the tire is a different size on the spare to the wheel it replaces. Tire sizes have to match across an 'axle'.

The tyre inspection applies only to those fitted to the road wheels. A faulty spare should be advised if it's noticed by the tester. First inspection point is that all tyres on the same axle must be the same nominal size, so fitting a spare that's a different size will be a fail. All available from VOSA online thanks to the wonders of technology: www.motinfo.gov.uk/htdocs/m3s04000101.htmThe police also can't get you for a faulty spare wheel unless you've fitted it to the car - in which case it ain't the spare any more! Otherwise any time you got a puncture and put your spare on you'd be driving illegally for having a hole in what is now your "spare" wheel

No, its correct That doesn't say 'spare' though does it... Only the tyres on the car are affected by this...

you are still incorrect as that is not refering to the spare only the tyres on the axle

To clarify both tyres on the same axle must be the same size and construction (both radial/xply)
There is also no requirement for a spare wheel in the test, and its presence/condition/size/flavour is of no consequence.

If by using a spare which is a different size to the other on the same axle you will therefore be correct, or incorrect, or whatever

I think Rich is saying that if the current spare is a different size to the current, knackered, tyre then the car will fail if put in with the spare fitted to the car.
In which case, he is quite correct.

It could have a tractor tyre on it, and it still wouldn't matter as fat as the MOT is concerned ;D As long as it's not bolted to a hub, it doesn't count as a roadwheel

As stated, spare doesn't come into the MoT test. I was refering to the ROADWHEELS. Hence AXLE pairs? If the spare is a different size as a get-me-home and used to try to get a ticket in terms of being fitted as a roadwheel, it will fail. Never kept my spare wheel bolted to an axle

Think we've covered this:
1) Spare isn't needed, or checked 2) Tyres must be the same across the same axle.
OK?
