I couldn't find my MOT certificate yesterday so was unable to tax the car in the post office as originally planned. The result is I have taxed it online so it IS taxed.
The problem with this is I don't have a disc as its yet to arrive but need to use the car. I need to go to Coventry today and stay there till the weekend and go back via retromania all concievably without a tax disc which I'm not happy about.
Where do I stand legally and should I just bite the bullet and spend 3 times as much petrol by taking the other car. I do have an emailed reciept from the DVLA confirming the tax disc purchased so would that be enough if I was stopped by the police

Tough one - if they run your plates through the system, they'll see it's taxed... but if they look at the windscreen, they'll see that you have no disc, which comes with a caveat saying 'disc must be displayed at all times'. Probably not worth the risk?

Last time I went to the post office to do it they didn't need the certificate because it's all linked up to the clever computer thingy so you could have shot yourself in the foot because..
If you tax by phone/online BEFORE it is due, you have (I think) 5 days grace at the beginning of the month for it to arrive. If you tax it when it is already due, then they don't give you that period of grace.
In reality, I reckon you will be okay, but potentially could be done for failure to display a tax disc.

Legally there is an offence of "failure to display" a tax disk which you could be found guilty of even if you've already paid. It's a bit of an out-dated offence now, from the days when the disk itself was the only practical way of checking if the tax had been paid or not.
Now the car will show as taxed on the DVLA computer (including ANPR system) as soon as you paid and that's what the Police normally use to check (it's more reliable than a disk that might be forged). The only worry you might have is jobsworth traffic wardens, who could have the car towed for failing to display.

there is no grace period at all.
personally i would risk it though if it is mot'd and insured, and the valid tax would show up on police check, just don't park it or drive it like a dafty.

There is a 5 day grace period if you taxed it online before it was due. www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Motoringtransactions/BeforeyouapplyD/DG_10034732However, you could be prosecuted for failure to display after Saturday, and I think Ben's right in saying that the 5 days doesn't apply if your tax has already expired when you apply. But I'm not sure about that one. EDIT - I also didn't need my MOT certificate in the PO last time I taxed a car in the PO. However, it was a big branch whcih had a desk dedicated to DVLA enquiries.

NO....DON'T DO IT!
You'll be caught within minutes, have your car impounded then crushed, you'll be dragged away kicking & screaming, questioned, tortured, sodomised and brainwashed.
Or you could always just run the risk and enjoy living life on the ragged edge....an outlaw, a rebel, a renegade.
You just need to ask - how big are your kahuna's?? LOL

Right its settled DAF is going tax disc or no as just discovered the master cylinder seal on the triumph has blown. I think id get in a lot more trouble driving a car with no brakes

Just in case you're still worried about appearing on the international 'most wanted list' - all my previous online tax discs have come through next day or the day after.

I thought you resealed the brake master around 19th / 20th of this month?
Strongly suggest you bin the cylinder for a new one if it's gone again in 2 weeks - anything else would be irresponsible in the extreme and loss of licence (at a minimum) when it all goes tits-up would be richly deserved. Of course, depending on what, or who you hit, your licence might be the least of your worries......

Its gone again the seals has started weaping again. Saying that it had no brakes is probably an exaggeration but it could very quickly go that way. I tried the budget fix it didn't work so we will go the whole hog. I don't like bodges on brakes, steering or running gear too much to loose if it all goes wrong

Tbh, if the cylinder bore was so bad that they've failed again this quickly I would have expected the wear to be visible when you did the seals. Visible wear in a brake cylinder always means it's dead.
