Hi all, I have need to tap the RR genius font. Does anyone know: Is a car with current tax and MOT that is (lightly) crash damaged, still legal to drive? The car in question is lightly bumped on the nose. Broken/smashed headlights (id only be running it home 20 miles during the day and praying for no surprise Fog attacks). And a smashed grille, bumper which would be removed before journey for safetys sake. Anyone know if I'd theoretcally be breaching any laws? Many thanks all. Potential purchase hinges on the affirmative. have some Saaby love:

Yeah dude, Dayinsure to get the fella home. Sensibleness is my middle name. Not as cool as Danger, but itll keep the licence clean longer. ;D Just wanted to make sure 'no functioning headlights' wasnt an on the spot fine or one billion point, do not pass go, do not collect £200, go staraight to jail offence. Plan to make the car as good as possible, and as safe as possible before a take it on the road.

Legally the only problem there is likely to be sharp edges (which obviously you'll remove or tape before driving) and the lights.
Broken headlights do make the car technically unroadworthy unless they have a "daytime only" MOT but they're not a "pointable" matter like illegal tyres - the worst you would get is a ticket to get them repaired and checked, which I'd assume you're planning to do anyway.
Also, make sure the front indicators are working and the right colour - if their lenses are broken then slap a couple of yellow bulbs in.
Bottom line is, make sure it looks as neat and tidy as possible, make sure there are no other issues (such as tyres) that might be noticed if you are stopped, and do expect to be stopped. You almost certainly won't be but if you're expecting it you'll be in a nice polite and helpful frame of mine for any plod who do want a closer look.

Right had a friend who had a similar story. Had someone reverse into him and smash a headlight. Everything else on the car was tickity boo bar paintwork damage. He contacted the insurance company who imediatly asked how the car was taken home, it was driven home to repair.
Police turned up 2 days later and impounded the car saying it had been driven illegally as it had a broken headlamp lense. Result £300 impounding fee requiring a trailer to pick it up 3 points on his licence and a £60 fine. Maybe he was unlucky but as I said the reason for prosectution was a broken headlamp.

So they had no evidence he hadn't fitted a working headlight with gaffa tape, driven home then removed it?

Clear repeaters with amber bulbs already (though I'll have to check they're all functioning, hadnt thought of that myself.) I drive like the one I'm driving is the last one on earth anyway so attract little or no attention, apart from the occasional thumbs up. Right. Thanks everyone. I'm armed with advice. Best go buy this thing.

How credible is the bloke telling you this? I find it very hard to believe as it is. Either there are a LOT of details missing, or the guy is pulling your plonker. It seems quite far fetched that the police would try and use that (weak) evidence to try and prosecute for a very minor offence like that, and even more far fetched that they could make the prosecution stick.

It was all going so well too.

Lovely clear photo of the front of the car no arguments there.

Photo'd being driven with a defective headlamp. I went with him to pick the car up.

you can get prosecuted for insercure front bumper, as i am being albeit rather slowly, but so long as no shap edges not having one would not be an offence.

I drove my Audi to my parents house after it had been shunted in the rear, I then drove later on in the evening back to my house. In all about 20 miles. No probs.
But it didnt have any broken lights, the rear lights were cracked and the boot was squished in but thats it.
By the way the police were next to us when the accident happened, they took witness statements etc breathalysed me and they guy who ran into the back of me etc they were happy to send me on my way after watching me jump up and down on the boot to get it to wedge shut.

I've driven accident damaged cars about for weeks without being tugged, but i also had to go all the way to Faversham in kent for a court hearing after getting pulled over on the way to Margate in a cortina with a smashed in wing on it, got three points and a fine.
Its luck of the draw, smashed headlamps will attract attention though.

I got pulled with a broken headlight (3 weeks..) after a crash- the reason was the shards of glass around the edge, rather than the lack of headlight...he suggested that I remove the glass or he'd radio the traffic car...
I removed it very quickly!

So they had no evidence he hadn't fitted a working headlight with gaffa tape, driven home then removed it? passed through one of them average speed camera things on the way home. Lovely clear photo of the front of the car no arguments there. But those average speed camera things don't take photos as such. They scan the number plate from the (video) image and ignore the rest of it. Besides which, as long as the sharp edges are cleaned up, driving with a broken headlight during daytime is not driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition - which is what the points for faulty tyres, brake lights and so on are awarded for. In fact, it's no different from driving around with a blown bulb in there. Which means your friend is either stretching the truth a little or has really really really upset his local plod. Is he ginger and the local Chief Inspector's daughter just had a ginger kid by any chance?

The police round here are getting rather piccy at the mo, I know a lad who got pulled in a mk1 range rover, all done up for off roading, after Market tube front bumper ect, police took his mot off him and wouldn't let him drive it away! Reasons were "non stock front bumper and end caps removed from rear bumper" even tho the front bumper was a bought one and TUV marked! Happening alot round here now
