managed to find a nos genuine exhaust for my car , no longer made by the factory blah blah
id like to make a effort to make it last best it can , whats the thoughts on drilling a small hole on the lowest point to let the water drain out ?
shouldnt make it noisy if its small and i could put a ss self taper in if it does /mot time

Wouldnt bother most condentation clings to the inside of the silencer... you don't wanna be drilling holes in tha.t..

Why don't you have the exhaust replicated in stainless, then sell the standard one?

Just give it a good thrash down the motorway on a regular basis. Cars that sit unused a lot or get light use seem to kill systems faster.

Cars that sit unused a lot or get light use seem to kill systems faster. definatly short journeys are a killer as the system does not get hot enough to dry out the condensation, I doubt that a small hole would work as RW says the condensation will stick to the inside. ST/ST is the way forward

No, don't drill a hole in it!

Have you noticed that if you get stuck behind a car crawling along with an old biddy at the wheel, that there is water running out of the tailpipe- the silencer being full of water. Give it a good thrash- the gas flow blows it out and the heat gets to the back to evaporate the rest! lol.

Seems to be a mixed bag of ideas. The back of the exhaust can on my truck has a hole in it from the factory, at the lowest point. Makes a mess where if bubbles carbon-y water out but it's done 122,000 miles and hasn't rotted out yet. --Phil

Factory exhausts tend to last ages anyway compared to aftermarket ones in my experiance, you get what you pay for and i doubt a hole will extend the life by much on a cheaper copy.
If its hard to get an exhaust for a car then get one made in SS, it adds to the resale value as well as makes your life easier.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

I am guessing your truck runs on diesel. It doesn't make as much heat as petrol so the exhaust runs cooler.

When I had an Imp one of the tips I read was to drill a hole in the lowest edge of the (Sport) silencer. It was amazing the amount of water that used to drip out so I'm a believer of this practice from past experience (the Imp silencer outlasted the car !)

Cheers D Nope, petrol- 5.3 V8, so there's plenty heat- that's only about two feet downwind of a pair of catalytic converters, the black is where the cats have trouble with the short trips (7 miles each way) to and from work that I make, it's mostly sulphurous carbon. It used to run a few hundred miles at a pop when we were running it as part of the business fleet. That hole being at the back corner of the can means it is really quiet, considerng. No pff-pfthpt-pffff-tpfftt at idle. Dull video but it proves a point I guess --Phil

Both of SWMBO's Mk5 Fiestas have had factory mild steel silencers with a hole drilled in the bottom of the back box. Neither has needed replacement, the last Fez was 5 years old when she sold it and was still on its original complete system....this one's 4 years old and likewise its not needed any attention. Compare this to her last two Mk4's which on average needed new back-halves every 12-18 months or so.
Makes perfect sense to me!

That's what happens when you buy cheap aftermarket exhausts, My Mk4 escort diesel had the origional system till it was 13 years old then went through 2 aftermarket back boxes in 3 years as well, now it has a factory system again and it's been on there for 6 years with no sign of rust and there's no hole in the back box just decent steel to start with

Seen some of new ones (Bosal, Walker ) with the hole, but they were drilled before being galvanised, not after, which might make a slight difference to the speed of corrosion.
