Hey Man, glad you're giving the car a better home than I'd have been able to offer it. TBH, it's good to be back down to one car from a logistics POV. Had the 340 been as easy for me to drive in traffic as my beloved Dollop, then I'd have had no hesitation in hanging on to that for longer, 'cos it is, as the pictures suggest, a decent enough car which has that unbreakable Volvo "feel" to it. Liking the graphics and where can I find one of those scrappage scheme survivor stickers, preferably in a colour that shows up against brown or black paintwork? I have a car that needs one of those! RE, the loose carb horror story: I dealt with that shortly after I bought FGT and used threadlock on the studs so that should be fine for some time to come, they tend to stall at junctions when they come loose though, so you'll get plenty of warning when it needs doing again. Nature of the beast, on account of the way the engine rocks about at idle, though that is a much smoother example than many. Enjoy! ;D

It is possible to get decent economy out of a CVT, but it requires a lot of practice and throttle control.
The trick is to use just enough throttle. Too much and it will rev its guts off and drink. Not enough it will rev its guts off and drink.
The most economical way and its fun too is to get it rolling and then floor it to the desired speed and back right off untill theres just enough to maintain the speed and the car should then overdrive. At full throttle the vaccum assistance to the change up is at its highest when your at the speed it should be able to change up such that the car is able to maintain the speed at minimum rpm. Also don't use your brakes much it revs the engine and wastes fuel, you will be suprised at just how much engine braking these afford.
Following these rules I have got an average of 54mpg out of Gladys before I was doing this she was averaging 17mpg. Also correctly tentioned drivebelts will drastically improve your fuel economy. Overtensioning is worse than undertensioning it will use more fuel and put undue strain on the propshaft.
One last thing incase you weren't told
All belt driven cars are exempt from rolling road brake tests and using one can seriously damage the transmission!! Your volvo is no differnent in this respect

.....All belt driven cars are exempt from rolling road brake tests and using one can seriously damage the transmission!! Your volvo is no different in this respect Yes, the tester we used knew that, so its brake test consisted of a few yards backwards and forwards across his forecourt. They don't, in spite of what the rules may say, need to use the decelerometer for this either, that comes down to their discretion, more importantly, the emission test must be carried out with the transmission in neutral since the clutch will be ruined if it's revved while in park. Emissions were >9% co and 800ppm before , 0.13% and barely any Hcs after.

That just gave me a giggle if they revved a DAF in anything other than neutral for the emission test they would have no garage wall left ;D .

GR9 to read how chuffed you are with the car mate, I'd never have done it justice or liked it properly, it has a good custodian in your good self. Have you got a season ticket for the Spanish Battery car park? Just that so many of the action piccies seem to have been taken up there..... ;D ....That just gave me a giggle if they revved a DAF in anything other than neutral for the emission test they would have no garage wall left ;D . Aye, these cheap DAFs without a parking pawl in the transmission...

That one in the vid sounds like it should be delivering milk From the inside, they sound like the worlds tiniest, weediest jet engine winding up. Well thats what I think anyway. But "milk float" is possibly more accurate.

It's still an alien concept to me, An old boy round the corner from my parents had a couple of DAF's, and I could normally walk faster. Don't Toyota now have some CVT cars? Edit, It all makes sense now. Think of a pushbike.

Ok, 0700 hours and off to McDees to meet a fella coming off night shift. What a way to spend a morning off work. Parking fail. Please insert Wood and Shinyness to Continue. Also tried to improve the Grille by adding more blackness. ^ can you tell what it is yet? Internal improvements continue. That looks a bit scabby. There, thats better. soz for the rubbish pics. I also seem to have a slip of paper inside my headlight. How queer. sm4 all. Next - Linseed oil on them grey bumpers!

Still no linseed on the bumpers (rain/work fail) Decided the wood rimmed wheel wasnt really dished enough to be comfortable for me so, SWITCH! Rain also means I cant Linseed the bumpers back into life. So what CAN I do.................................................? New Wheel + Spring return button + Spotlamp Bracket + Electricials tape + Idiot = I'm sure thatll hold till I can be bothered to take the wheel back off and grind the hornring out. Meep Meep!
