I'm thinking I need a cheap to run car. Finances need some help.
Car would need to be
1. More than 30 years old for my insurance 2. cheap to buy (ideally less than £300) 3. cheap to run (ideally 30+ MPG urban) 4. Not horribly slow 5. Fairly comfy.
I used to have a HA Viva, and that was a laugh for a little car, but where have they all gone? Theres one for £500 & no bids on eBay ATM but way down south and something about it doesn't smell right.
Been offered a Herald 1200 by a mate for £400 but I promised another mate first refusal on it.
Any great suggestions?

BMC 11/1300... if you can find a cheap one that's not rotten...
|
|
... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

There's little benifit to age on insurance, really. Once it's in the classic range, that's it, and that's anything over 15 years ;D depends more on the brand than anything else! Not horribly slow? A herald 1200 Go for a 1300 or 1500HL Dolly, comfortable then too Lot of the TDC members now get 35/40mpg out of their Dollies, probs summat like 80 quid to insure!

Erm, basically if its over 30 years old I can insure it for £15. If its less than 30 years old I need to take out another policy which could cost over £100. Also afer 1973 you have to pay for road tax. Erm, why? LOL.
I haven't even seen a BMC 1100/1300 in years, let alone one thats not rotten...

With those criteria, it's either going to be a Volvo 144 (bit too juicy though), or, and I never thought I'd say this, an Imp sounds like a spanking idea...

Yeah, forgot to say I saw a realy trick Imp blast past me at sainsburys in fallowfield. It was great and had loads of attitude. way cool.
Its a tight brief you set Alistair, but if anyone can do it you can. what about a 60's 70's ford, anglia, 100e zephyr? a scan through the whole of Ebay Classics helps for inspiration like now....

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

My daily driver is 41 years old (1965)
Hell there used to be a guy drove to work in a 1930s Sunbeam at a factory near where I used to live. That thing was mental. 70 years old now, not restored!
The thing about the Olds is the MPG, the fact that it needs some TLC, and I'm very tight for cash right now.
I'd also like something simple and lightweight to work on that the parts don't; have to be special ordered from the USA all the time.
I think the ideal "get me about for the next few months" daily driver would be another Saab 9000 or similar but the thing is I'd have to pay to tax & insure it. My old Saab was a cracking buy at £175 but back then I had a traders policy so I could drive anything for free. Just cost me £90 or whatever for the tax and I ran it for ages.
I've had a few Moggie Minors and tell you what they are belting good little cars. So easy to maintain and will cruise OK at 75 with a following wind....

Deep grey, looked neat too, a guy in his twenties driving and his mate, just roared past me at traffic lights into JS. should of chased him (on foot) into carpark really, but always seems a bit stalker like at the time!
