got a mk 2 polo engine here , I'm cleaning it up ready to swap over
its a budget job , i havent got money to waste.ive stripped the valves out the head and id like to gather some idea on the condition of the valve guides
any ideas ? as its either clean up this used unknow head , or use the 180k one thats on the car that doesnt use oil

Put a valve back in and see if there is any play in it. IIRC if there's enough movement to feel it they're worn.

Hmm maybe a bit more than you'd expect, but if its done a lot of miles, or has been running a bit rich for a while, its not that abnormal. To be honest if its been burning a little oil the stem seals were probably the issue, and the guides should be fine for a good long while (I've never actually replaced any yet!)

hmm instresting youve not replaced any
I'm scared of spending what little money i have on this if it turns out to be a oil burner , the one on the car isnt using oil
in your experiance do the valves slop around in the guides much?

Just check for side to side play by putting a valve back in and wiggling it. If you can feel it moving its worn.
