Very glad this was found, good news.
Think it should be explained from a banger driver's perspective that ID stuff is harder with classics because they often get "plate raped" before we get our hands on them.
People stripping a car for spares often keep the tags & V5 - especially if it is a pre-73 version of a car that spans the tax divide, so they can "ring" a '73 on vehicle. On older cars especially, the ID tags and plates can end up being attached to another vehicle that is MOT'able so the number plate can be put on retention and sold - there are a lot of reasons that can lead to a lack of ID tags that have nothing to do with the legitimacy of the car as a banger.

Ok so that would mean some cars could not be raced , small sacrifice for knowing no stolen cars would ever be able to be raced either. That means your OWN car of course would be a lot safer.

don't even get me started... just spent 4 days re-identifying an XK8 Convertible... Excellent - Its good to know someone is trying hard then, I would actually like a job like that (apart from telling an unsuspecting owner they have a ringer). A place I used to deal with a lot regularly got a load of supposedly unidentifable seized/ recovered off road bikes for breaking in the days before everything was crushed, numbers were still visible on some of them! I would have thought most of them would have been uninsured losses as well so the owners would still be looking - used to make me livid everytime I went in.

Ok so that would mean some cars could not be raced , small sacrifice for knowing no stolen cars would ever be able to be raced either. That means your OWN car of course would be a lot safer. Having had a car stolen that I had put a lot of work into, I know how it feels and have every sympathy with people who have had the same happen & would hang the scrotes up by the toenails given the chance.... However, I would have to scrap half the old cars I have bought perfectly legitimately to satisfy your suggestion, but you think that it is a small sacrifice? I would rather pour petrol over my £6000 BMW and set it alight than be forced to scrap a rusty siezed up £200 Austin Cambridge without racing it - you will probably never understand that, so please don't tell me what is a small sacrifice because you have no idea what you are talking about. Read through the threads on here, there are far more aircooled VW and RWD Escorts/Anglias/MK1 Cortinas stolen than anything raceable - I wonder what happens to them, 'cos they aren't getting raced in the bangers? They are getting stolen and broken up for bits, so are you wanting to enforce "no ID no sale" rules on the autojumbles and ebay as well? How often do YOU ask for proof that a 2nd hand spare was obtained legit? We have got a bloke who contacted us via an ad I placed on Retro Rides up at the yard today stripping bits off a CROWN Super Saloon that is heading for the track - he hasn't asked to see the V5 or check the chassis number...

Very true. It's a shame that a minority of criminals spoil things for everyone else, whether it's banger racing or parts trading.

the thing that gets me about this is that there are hundreds of beaten up modern vehicles lying aroud that can be had for free/next to nowt, yet they go to all the effort of craning away a unique car in perfectly good condition.
So they must be getting a hard on from smashing up something old. Is it just for kicks or some kind of bet?

i believe, but stand to be corrected by those more in the know... but you get extra points/bonus/prize money for bangering something rare?
As far as i am concerned some of the banger guys i know (who are legitimate breakers), and that quite a few are cool petrol heads themselves... they save all the useable spares, trim, etc, that other wise would go into landfill in the yards!

I've bought plenty of parts from banger racers (lights, glass, trim, electric window motors, etc..) and have found them to be fantastic people to deal with. Keeping a Mk2 Granny on the road is much easier because of that; which is almost a strange oxymoron, but hey!
