Hmmmm.
I've seen a consul lowline that i like the look of. it's road legal and ready to roll, but it's totally stock. A quick search on the bay has revealed some weller rims that would go on it, but I also found a mk1 3.0V6 Granny and the cogs started turning. I know the Mk1 Grannies were called consuls - or something to do with the changeover - don't know, but do the two share the same parts? Is there anything which would just swap over? better still, could i swap out the lot (engine, trans, rear axle, front sus) and have a relatively painless V6 consul build?
Cheers in adavance.

This is what i've gathered from doing our 400e (which is based on a consul running gear; Some parts are interchangeable with mk1 zephyr/zodiac. Front disc conversion is possible from mk2 ( i think Z car ) That's about it i'm afraid. P.S. I have an assortment of 13" and 14" steel wheels if you want donor's for banding If your lucky you may find a set of 15" steels but they're quite rare. Took us 3 years to find ours !

Bum. Thanks mate. I really love Consuls, but I've never driven a stock one. I would have thought it would be very slow, handle like a wayward ship in a gale, and drink the juice like Amy Winehouse. Am I close to the truth? This one has got bub brakes front and back - all good, but I want disks and a V of some kind

There may be more swaps possible but that's as far as my knowledge goes ! I'm assuming your looking at ' three on the tree ' ? Makes engine /gearbox swaps a little more involved!

Is it the Mk2 Consul that has shorter front sheet metal than a zephyr or am I thinking of another car? You used to be able to buy a gearbox crossmember so you could bolt a 302ci Ford / C4 auto but I think they've been unavailable for years.

If you swap everything out youhave listed will end up with a car breaking the DVLA 8 points system. and in need of BIVA to maintain full legality .
The V6 ( needs to be front sump ),and an auto will fit without cutting bulkhead about , a lowline should have discs on the legs from late '61 though with drums a servo will still give you a usable car. Back axle is strong enough for about 150bhp stock and all still legal under the points system..
You can actually make a Pinto fit on the front of the column change with parts swapping.
302 will fit Zephyr /Zodiac without cutting but not in a Consul due to the 6 inch shorter front sheetmetal.

Can't be too difficult to adapt on Capri, Granada, Cortina or Mondeo discs onto the original struts. You'd need to make up a mount for the caliper and probably get a spacer turned up for the wheelbearings. Then it'll all just bolt on.

If you want to know what can and can't be done and the best ways to uprate a Z car it's worth talking to Kev down at Zodiac Motor Services in Erith Kent. he's a mine of knowledge, restores and races them and is no averse to a modified one.
