So... I really miss my old white Trump, so I figured leading into the warmer months it might be a good idea to get my mitts on another one. Coincidentally, everybodies favourite pinkfluffytellybunny Joe/Goat/Flange (of www.oldschool.co.nz notoriety - you will be 'Flange' forever and always btw) was flicking his 2500 PI for a reasonable sum... with the exception of it's injection gear. A sum was agreed upon what seems like several months ago, and we both finally got our curse word together and rendezvoused in Masterton to arrange transfer of the Trump.
This was the old one, for those unaware of it. Did a 3000km roadtrip in this over new years two years ago, absolutely awesome motoring IMO. Unstressed, comfortable, not overly economic but the fun factor more than made up for it.
Money was exchanged. Volk mesh wheels were substituted for stock 13" steels Cut springs and associated struts were exchanged for stock items And shortly enough I was driving it home.
Before I so much as cleaned it, I ventured out today and snapped a few shots.
Externally, it's pretty decent although probably not as clean as the pictures might suggest. Some minor rust in both front doors, patchy paint and assorted dodgy paint 'coverups' are all around it, but this isn't a biggie... will simply be a case of fix the rust, get the correct badging back on it (it's missing both rear badges) and a PI grille back on and we should be ready to roll for summer. Couple of super minor issues like aligning the front bumper properly and replacing a dented/rusty section of the rear bumper will also need to be sorted.
Inside, it's a little worse for wear in parts. However, black interior is a HUGE bonus... probably the rarest of all the interior schemes provided in Mk2 2000/2500. This one has benefitted in the past from a retrim, at least as far as door trims and carpet goes... bare minimum I'll be popping a new center console in if I can find one (this one is quite cracked) and make up a couple of new front carpets for it, tidy interiors are probably one of the more important factors in a car for me. It would be awesome to retrim the seats (just the cloth part) in a similar fabric, but I suspect this will be beyond budget so black sheepskin seat covers will do the biz nicely.
Initial plans for mods - think along the lines of my old white car. Bolt my Brights onto it, remove parts of the springs and just drive it for now. Also need to balance the carbs properly, get the choke working on the front carb (currently only running on the rear) and sort out the problem with the kickdown on the auto. Long term I have a bit of a period style rally theme idea bouncing around in my head. 15x7 custom steels in gunmetal, big Cibie Super Oscar spotlights up front, matte black bonnet, number circles on the doors and period sponsor decals and striping. Not to mention removal of bumpers, and some appropriate mudflaps touching the deck. Sort of what I envision a tarmac spec WRC Trump 2.5 might have looked like...
The car also came with a 4spd box, pedalbox, slave and master cylinders for the clutch, flywheel and all required lines so a conversion to manual will be on the cards later - I have also negotiated a 4spd Laycock overdrive gearbox for it so it's likely that will find it's way in.
