... or know of a thread in which someone has achieved this? I am just embarking on another project, and want to fit a Ford Cologne lump under the bonnet.
The exact details of the amitions are in my readers rides thread, but I would like to see other projects along the same vien.
... and, no, I don't want to go V8, K series, Vtech (sorry, Ztech!), twin cam, steam powered, Mk2 reciprocating dingle hopper or any other engine LOL! I've been asked so many times "why not use this engine? That engine?" and while I am aware other engines are higher revving, offer better power to weight, will do my washing up for me and walk the dog if I ask it, I want to use the V6, thank you please! ;D

Yeah, I know the feeling good on you for sticking to a plan. And yeah, the cologne will fit.. it's a pretty tried and tested formula too - a couple of years back I pulled an early 80's custom MM (fur, jack kit, wolfies, sidepipes...) out of a barn that had a 2.8 in it. In fact, the ford engine was about the only reuseable part....

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

Excellent! You didn't happen to notice how it was cooled did you? I want mine to be a street sleeper, so have challenges like keeping stock looking wheels with the different PCD of the innevitable disc brakes, if the engine will even fit un the engine bay without an obscene amount of butchery etc. I think the type 9 gearbox will more or less fit without any hassle at least!

Cut the bulkhead and shift the motor back as far as it'll go. A lad I know bought a Minor saloon with an essex v6 mounted without cutting the bulkhead and the handling was dangerous. Not only did it understeer and snap oversteer, when he upgraded the front brakes it'd do stoppies. Not good.

But IIRC the Cologne is lighter than the Essex. Light enough? I don't know.
Mk1 Polo discs are a quite easy conversion from what I've heard, and since they are 4/100, they can be made to fit the original PCD with just a slight enlarging of the holes... If I remember correctly, it has been a while ago since I last heard about it...

They're both iron block, iron heads so can't be that much different.

I want to absolutely avoid cutting the bulkhead, doing so constitutes chassis / monocoque modification and comes with a nice BIVA test...

2.3 cortina rad or V6 mk2 granny rad is fairly compact and will cool the 2.8 no bother, Scorpio rads are a bit lower but a lot wider, i guess you need to fit the engine and see how much room is left, shouldn't be hard to find a rad that will fit.

They're both iron block, iron heads so can't be that much different. Matt IIRC the Essex are heavier than a Ford V8 Smallblock...

If youre deteremined to go V6, what about sourcing a later 24V Scorpio motor..
Gotta be lighter as its got alooominum in it, and may need less cooling.

If you're not wanting to cut the bulkhead i'd bin the Cologne V6 idea altogether. It really was a deathtrap, great for rolling burnouts though. Stick a 1.8 Rover VVC engine in they're more powerful than the boat anchor, and weigh curse word all as they're all ally.

Oh oh.... youve done it now! :-)
If weight is a big problem then how about a Rover KV6?
I know its not a Ford boat anchor, but it is a shed load lighter, and cheap to buy.

A lightweight V6 would be perfect as they're shorter so you can push them back further. How much do Alfa V6's weigh?

A fair amount. It's an old engine design with an iron block. You also then get into gearbox games as RWD Alfas use transaxles.
Edit - Omega? Mercedes?

Back before they all swapped Fiat twincams in, the V4 was the engine of choice.

no idea of fitting, but if you do fit a cologne, DON'T fit the 2.8i out of a capri, the ports are siamesed so tuning potential is very low, 2.9 12v engine out of a scorpio is the way to go, same block but better heads and better tuning potential, the 24v 2.9 is a good engine too, again cologne based, but being a quad cam its pretty wide, struggle to get into a minor possibly?

Width isn't as much as an issue with Minors, its getting the motor sat far enough back so that its not hanging infront of the front wheels.

24v still manages to almost fill a Cortina engine bay despite being "short"
