Lots of food for thought there chaps... Thanks for the info and thoughts! So, the Cologne would seem to be too heavy then... THere is a surprising amount of room under the Moggy bonnet, particularly width.
What am I gonna do with this Ford COlogne block then?!?!? lol!

weights relative, are you building something for the race track or something to have a laugh with? 24v was noticably heavier in my Cortina than a pinto, but i didn't care it still went round corners ok and it was fast, wheelspining all over the place, 70mph sideways up the A127 was a grin.
If you want a cheap 150bhp then the 2.3 16v from a bugeye scorpio will do the job and will come with clutch and gearbox already on te back of it, should be able to find one for 200 quid, theres no need to get all super technical and sophisticated in a fun car.
People have been dropping big heavy lumps in small cars for years, no ones gonna tell you an AC cobra is rubbish 'cos the engine is to heavy.

It's not a track beast! lol! If it was, I would be going a completely different direction! Nah this is just for a giggle, the odd blast up the strip at the Pod and to upset the plastic fantastic fraternity. Speaking of which, I have a GMC Vandura and that 5.7 V8 does pull well, curse word on bends but you can catapult yourself off a roundabout nicely and that surprises the people that just undertook you and cut you off! lol! Scorpio motor is a possibility... What's the Saab V4 block like?

Bug eye Scorpios had the 2.3 in, You might need a decent auto electrian to sort out the wiring though if you can't do it yourself, easiest way is to trip out the loom and hide the Scorpios ignition lock with the key still in under the dash, if you take the key out the car wont start, its got a built in immobilser. Any of the Grannies twin cam lumps are ok, cheap and quite pokey, the 2.3 is the best though, will take RS2000 cams for a bit more oomph i've been told, still not lightweight but lighter than a Cologne and will do lots more mpg and once again, CHEAP to buy, often you can buy a car, take out what you need and get your money back weighing the rest in, thats what i did with my Transit vans donor.

the moggy engine bay was designed for a flat four IIRC...
If youve given up on the Iron idea, what about a Renault V6 turbo or a Scooby motor...?

I wouldn't bother with a Saab V4, I am fitting something different to my Saab to get rid of it as it doesn't have much tuning potential.
As standard it has 65bhp in the saab. With a bit of work 130bhp is fairly easy, after that its difficult and expensive.
On the plus side it is very compact and unlike the other ford V4 (forget the name?) it is more reliable.
The idea that popuptoaster suggested, 2.3 ford engine sounds like the easiest way forward. Those are good cheap engines.

I seem to remember the Saab v4s were based around the ford V4s Fiat Twinks are HEAVY, probably not much lighter than the cologne, What about the V6 from a Mondeo, available in 2.5 and 3.0, same engine thats fitted to the Jags, so RWD is not a problem, and once they are stripped of all the curse word, they are quite small,

saab v4 is a cologne v4 not a great engine but would fit very easy as its not even as long as the old a series I seem to remember the Saab v4s were based around the ford V4s Fiat Twinks are HEAVY, probably not much lighter than the cologne, What about the V6 from a Mondeo, available in 2.5 and 3.0, same engine thats fitted to the Jags, so RWD is not a problem, and once they are stripped of all the curse word, they are quite small, jag X type that has these motors are 4 wheels drive and transversely mounted so fwd layout but there are bell housings available for them the engine does have a weird setup though with an idler shaft and rear mounted belt so tricky to fit in other cars .

From what I've read, those Grand Vitara boxes have the transfer box bolted onto the back. once that't removed, you can bolt up a propshaft as per normal. As for the weight of the Fiat twincam, it's 270lbs, wheras the A series in the Minor is 252lbs. Yes the twincam is no lightweight, but neither is the stock engine.

That's a nice looking V6 lump. Is there anything that runs carbs (for simplicity) out there that would be a viable option? I really really don't want to go inline 4 banger. Anything V or flat I will consider, V for preference. Or am I asking too much? I could always "stick to what I know" and use VW flat 4 power, but I just got rid of my type 4 engine!

If youve given up on the Iron idea, what about a Renault V6 ...? Renault engine was a joint venture with Peugeut and, most plentiful, Volvo, so plenty of gearboxes available too. Early engines were on carbs and wide range of capacities and specs to choose from.

What a Mazda "K" V6 out of a Mazda MX-6 or similar. The 2 litre one makes 160bhp and RWD boxes can be fitted. Matt
