Are there any RWD gearboxes which mount the starter motor on them, like the VW rear engined gearbox? I can't think of any off the top of my head.
Just considering engine choices for my Moggy Minor, and obviously gearbox choices too.
One of the engines I am considering is the type 4 air cooled (pending looking under the bonnet and taking some measurements), but there is no way of mounting a starter to the gearbox. Anyone any ideas?
(the shortlist is an early Mazda rotarty, the Type 4 air cooled, Subaru flat 4 and a hot A series).

Most RWD Ford boxes bolt the starter to the box.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

He means a box where the starter sits alongside the box rather than the block.
Cant think of one tbh...
T4 in a Moggy would be a laugh though! A mate of mine makes Porsche cooling conversions if you need one.

oh i see, facing the other way to normal, custom bellhousing for that i think.
I know ts your ride your way and all that, and i get you want a VW motor in there but seems like a backwards step to fit an old aircooled VW engine when you'd have an easier time fitting a more modern one that would also be more powerfull, more economical and more reliable.

That's what I mean, starter motor mounting onto the gearbox, not the engine. Like I said, I can think of none.
How much does your mate make the kits for..?
Yeah I know exactly what you are saying about the backwards step. However, Type 4 power can be absolutely stonking, especially with a Jake Raby kit (there's a video on youtube somewhere of a naturally aspirated type 4 Bug spanking a Ferrari on a quarter mile).
I'm just at the "weighing up the options" stage right now, so far a rotary lump is winning for me, but I have a huge, huge soft spot for VW air cooled. Realistically though, I won't be able to get heating from the type 4 motor without some trick fabrication, and won't get a gearbox mated to it without some trick fabrication, so it may just remain a fantasy. They are damned light though compared to water pumpers!

Rover K series and L series had the starter that way round, so I dunno if the box from a Caterham or a van would work.... This is the porsche fan guy.. www.sharpbuilt.com.au/sharpbuilt1/page12.htmTheres a cool vid of him spanking his new buggy in the dunes too ;D Rotaries are super cool, I almost went for one in the back of my Davrian yonks ago! I changed my mind when the company flogging tuning bits told me I'd get 4mpg from a bridge ported 13B when hooning it...

Fuel economy when hooning t is f no concern to me, I have a GMC Vandura that does single figures just driving "normally" around city roads, and can only just touch 20mpg when cruising on teh motorway at 55 with cruise control on and overdrive engaged.
Porsche Fan guy is based down under, right?
As much as my mate is trying to get me to go type 4, as much as it would be a nice unusual trick to have, the gearbox choice is proving prohibitive, I could use a synchro box with the front wheel drive locked off, but it's a damned expensive way to go and a waste of a 4WD box, it owuld be cheaper to use a Ford type 9 box and buld a supercharged A series for the same power.
Rotary is really, really floating my boat, buying an RX7 and breaking it myself, using the gearbox and any other useful bits (wondering if the calipers can be pulled off and adapted for use?) and selling what's left. I love stripping a car, it's always good fun! ;D If I get lucky I might even stumble on a good tuned one.

Opel Mantas have the starter alongside the box. The 2.0 CIH is aheavy motor though and the 1.8 won't come cheap.

It's just the gearboxes I am interested in not the engines that belonged to them dude. Cheers for that one though! How many gears do they have and what sort of ratios and power handling are we talking about?
