OK so the muppet that was supposed to be buying my caddy never turned up today which is a bit annoying as I was gonna spend that money +another £500 on an MX5. so now I have £500 to spend and I want a liitle cheap to run, reliable car I can roll for 6 months while I tart up the caddy and MOT it... ... I need suggestions of what to buy, bear in mind I like to not drive corsas/fiestas/saxos!! (but I want something I wont have to put much time/effort/money into running.... hit me with your quirky ideas!! (or uber cheap MX5s! )

+1 on a 205 i've regulary seen pov spec 1.1's go for £300 or so with full mot stupidly cheap to run and fun to drive

Old Volo 740s and 940s with astronomical miles also worth considering, but that 205 ends the thread for me. Those little diesels are ace.

rover 200.
don't mock, they are comfortable, sip petrol and are about 100bhp if you are panicky about headgaskets, get the 1.6 honda one.

ive got a escort mk5 saloon, fitted with rs2000 engine and lsd gearbox, also rs2000 lowered suspension, it handles like a dream, brand new exhaust from front to back, new heater blower motor, the conversion was done by a company so not a front garden bodge. It has mot and tax until june next near. All it needs is a wishbone or a anti roll bar bush as it knocks over bumps by your feet, the logbook hasnt been changed and i insure it as a standard 1.6 which is very cheap. its got central locking, sunroof, immobiliser, also uprated speakers and sub and amp which could be included for a little extra. Anyway I'm after £450 ono as i got nudged in the back at traffic lights and the boot is harder to close now. no proper damage though.
its well worth the money purely because of the tax and mot, then you could break it and sell it when its out....
Anyways, let me know, i don't really want to sell, but want to money to go towards my capri and mk4 escort. thanks

, the logbook hasnt been changed and I insure it as a standard 1.6 which is very cheap. Then you sir, are an idiot. What you're saying is you're happy to drive uninsured, despite paying some money to an insurance company.

well i could understand if i gad put something thats clearly not standard under the bonnet like a v8 or something that is clearly modified. this is completely standard and doesnt even have an induction kit. the original plug cover that was red and had 2.0 16v on it is gone, nothing even shows it as being 2.0. when i bought it, it was even advertised as a 1600 equipe. i didnt even know it was a 2000.
and for you to sit there and call me an idiot is not on. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only person on this forum who hasnt delcared something.....so everyone on here rings their insurance if they change anything? even changing your steering wheel or gearknob means your car is modified so go figure or go calling everyone else an idiot. i thought this forum was pretty laid back but clearly not, just another forum where everyone is turning a bit anal.

No, it's just another forum where we don't like uninsured drivers, who (notwithstanding their complete disregard for everyone else on the road by driving without valid insurance) push the premiums up for those of us who stay within the law. You're surpised at your hostile reception? There's a clear line between 'being laid back' and 'turning a blind eye'.

Hey buddy, irrespective of what people think, you're running a hell of a risk posting something like this on an open forum. I know first hand the amount of officials that sweep the internet for information just like this... Trust me, what you do is your business as far as I'm concerned. But I'd recommend you keep it that way Aaaaand back to the thread, 205 looks bargainous. To be honest there are plenty of choices available to you... My last purchase was a B4 Passat TD that cost £400 and has just clocked another 200miles today on top of the 11K I've done in the last five months. Maintanence? Pah, replace ;D

Back on topic, would a nice Rover 100 (Metro) be of interest? My nepthew is selling his.
It is 1.4l 8v (so a lot less prone to hgf). Very low miles (I'll check if you're interested).
Just mot'ed, not sure about tax.
It is in Kent.
