TWR bought steering wheels from Raid & MoMo and had their logo engraved onto them. In fact a few different manufacturers used that same design of wheel but just used whatever size boss that was specific to the car. TWR offered them for both BMW's & Mazdas which were both sold from the Motorsport Centre, in Oxford. I got these decals through the post from an ex-employee which will be a nice finishing touch. I finally managed to trace my TWR's baby sister. :thumbsup ( I believe this car was destroyed by fire? ) It's 2.8 engine was bored and stroked by Racing Services in Twickenham by Ken Brittain and Spike Anderson. Now BBR iirc? The County Car rear spoiler was based on the e9 CSL, a copy made by TWR as the original BMW parts were too expensive for Tom Walkinshaw! (He was Scottish after all) The front was based on an elongated Alpina spoiler designed by Peter Stevens ( of McLaren F1 fame), fitted with self tapping screws- easy to repair, BMW wanted TWR to use the Motorsport one, I think they cost around £150.00 whereas our one was £6.00 from tooling that cost £90.00! I'll post more details as I get them.

Great car Mark and in amazing condition, and some outstanding research going on there too, this is certainly a bit of BMW History

Thanks mate. I've really enjoyed the research side of things too. Mind you, if it wasn't for the internet I doubt I would have been able to find out half as much!
I'm on the hunt for a silver bootlid so that I don't have to paint anything other than a couple of localised repairs. I do have a red bootlid that's rust free but I'd rather have the patina of an original one. Where the cars own bootlid went I have no idea?
Dave @ M-tech in Essex, who's doing the bulk of the work, called me today and said that the head is back from the machine shop. It's been pretty extensively flowed and had bigger inlet valves fitted. 46mm iirc? I'm just waiting on some photos now.

Would be very interested to see what work has been done on the head, as it would be the same for the E12's

Good find - Great detective work and looks like it's going to be a very special car when it's all done

Progress has been slower than I would have liked on the TWR but I know it'll be worth the wait. The shell has had all the suspension & subframes removed and is now inverted on a spit. The plan is to take the whole of the underside back to bare metal prior to a chemical process to stop rust. This has to be one of the best un-restored e21 shells I have ever seen. There is absolutely no rot and the only rust is very, very light surface rust due to the metal being scraped to remove the underseal some time ago. In fact, the car sat in a dry workshop for over 20 years and has been well protected from the elements.
Because the car is going to be used regularly we've decided to fit GAZ suspension and a WILWOOD brake upgrade. The original Alpina/TWR parts will all be safely stored so the car can be returned to 100% original if so desired.
Hopefully, I will be able to post some more photos soon and it won't be too much longer till assembly starts.

Now this is will be an awesome car, ultimate period E21. Can't wait to see this finished.
Despite the fact the mods your carrying out on the car will easily be reversable and will undoubtably improve the car i just can't help feel refurbing the period stuff will be far cooler for such a rare beast.

I know where you're coming from and I will be refurbing the original stuff too. It's just that when you consider that this car has the potential to hit 60 in 5 seconds and reach 150mph, it makes sense to have the best brakes and suspension you can. I've already survived one near fatal accident so I'm not keen to try and second.

Very interesting, great read. I had a TWR E28 years ago, was kind of rotten and not very good all round to be honest... But I was interested to find out about the TWR history you'd got. Bookmarked

Progress has been slow guys but it's getting there. I'm away for 2 weeks but will try and upload pics once back home again.
One thing I have done, is decide to go for the optional triple 45 Weber DCOE's. They're on order now so it's going to sound awesome.

Great thread- very interesting read with the period adverts. I wish I could find more info like what you have got for Elford engineering who did the turbo setups mazda rX7s. here in Kidlington were TWR? I used to live only 2.5 miles from Kidlington. It looks to me like they were around in the industrial estate near the airport?
Lovely car. All Bmws old in NZ are too expensive. I would love a 2002.
