I'm a goafer (apprentice) for Delphi. We make diesel injectors and fuel filters which isnt that exciting but quite technical! lots of 0.001mm and less tolorances! I do a bit of everything at the moment but i will almost cirtanly end up as a machinist. Cool - my mate has recently got a job at Delphi, presumably in the design side of things regrading diesel bit n' bobs, not sure if he's started yet but if you come across a skinny asian chap called Dev say hi for me Its interesting reading what other forum members do for a living, & it does seems that there are certain patterns emerging, though you can always read more into stats than is necessary or important - though it would appear there are alot of people doing similar types of jobs, generally it seems we all come from all warks of life doing different things to earn a crust - but with a shared interest in dodgy old cars ;D Myself - I design & produce working drawings using Autocad for a company who produce Architectural metalwork. I've been doing the same job pretty much since I left college when I was 18 - starting off on a drawing board then moving onto 2D CAD (we also have 2 seats of Solidworks - but i'm sure they don't want me to use it incase they have to pay me more ) I suppose i'm still here after nearly 11 years Cos I actually enjoy it - we get involved with some really interesting & diverse projects & often get a break from the office to visit site to carry out surveys etc. Most of our work seems to be in London & more of the prestigious end of the market - more well known clients/projects that we've been involved with include TAGMclaren, Canary Wharf, New Wembley Stadium , London Underground etc etc. I must admit I am proud of the fact that I work for a company who still actually Manufacture stuff in the UK

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.

I work in the city of London as an Insurance/Reinsurance Broker. I don't know much about Motor or Residential cover but have done work for most of the very large industrial/commercial companies mentioned on here (if any of you are the MD of Corus, Vodaphone or M&S etc .. then PM me.....).
I came into this business in 1980 as a stop gap until I could get one of the jobs I really wanted, but I then found out that those jobs are 'closed shop' and the HomeBoss says that I'm too old to be an F1 driver or a Test Pilot in a brothel... ;D

Reinsurance is basically insuring the insurance companies, so that a huge claim (eg hurricane / earthquake etc) doesn't wipe out the company who is paying out.

its quite funny as most of the people i work with and know in the motor industry want out of the motor trade into IT in some way, and most of the people i know, and judging buy some of the posts , in IT want out into the motor trade! or have huge intrests of cars! Or in some cases are linked to both! my conclusions is that without cars or computers what jobs would there be? imho the motor trade especially main dealers has totally lost the plot.i ran a busy parts dept, with 3 staff and 12 mechanics and was answerable to directors etc,yet the dolly bird who sat on reception flashing her jubblies and making tea for punters earnt £2.5k a year more and a company car.wheres the justice in that?

I'm a student, doing a 1 year foundation course in Art atm before having a big fat year off to learning welding and painting skizils (and save up) and get my Clubby on the road, then I'm going to do a Contemporary Decorative Crafts degree at Lincoln. I'm learning to be a silversmith too. Dad has worked at nearly every car dealership in the area alongside running his own garage and now he's in the truck trade - apparantly a welcome break from how car dealerships have gone down the pan, although the company is about to go bust (not his fault! his branch is being taken over hopefully) Can't win em all..

Deal with any major property world-wide except the americas (north and south - but others here specialise in those territories). Not the most interesting (especially after 26 years) and not the best paid, despite what everyone elsethinks (we're not all merchant bankers or stockbrokers), but it'll do until my 6 numbers come up.

As your employment plays a large part in your life, for me it forms and defines my opinions on a lot of things. It's interesting that there's a healthy representation from the IT community, design, general media, self employment and mechanical type stuff... Little or no health care, law, insurance, etc Know what you mean! I didn't expect to be the only accountant here...(although I do some business advice etc too). Everyone always assumes accountancy is boring, and a while back I'd have disagreed. But I've been ground down by it thanks to some crappy (previous) employers and have reached a point where it's 'kin difficult to turn around and try something else, without selling my house and cars (her indoors won't have any of that, and the cars wouldn't net much anyway!) So I'll be spending the summer having a think about what to do next, whether to stick with it or do something else. I'm thinking about teaching or maybe selling cars, or if I could get enough clients I *could* carry on, self-employed, dealing solely with clients in the motor trade. Been self-employed before and loved it, but couldn't get a mortgage when I needed to move! Rant over, if my boss is on "cookie, history and temporary file patrol" I could be looking for a job sooner than anticipated!

It turned up in the attic. *n
