I don't know about tax, but from an insurance point of view, it would still be a modified Corsa GSi, so the mainstream insurers would struggle with it.

As long as you can get a garage to sign a letter for you, you can alter the capacity and engine number on the V5, and you will only pay tax for a 1.2 (assuming it's pre-2001 - later than that and you'll pay the same amount of tax whatever engine is in it).
However, it will still be registered as a GSi (just with a 1.2 engine insetad) - and will need to be insured as a GSi modified with a 1.2 engine.
I'd suggest that finding a 1.2 Corsa would be easier, cheaper, and more practical in the long run.

thanks for the replys! i do like the look of the gsi's though. maybe i could find a 1.2 the same colour and swap the bumpers and bits over,I'm sure a modified 1.2 will be alot better on insurance

You'll probably pay the same.

May sound daft, but you may end up paying less if you just put GSI running gear back in, as it will become 'standard'

Phone round the insurers - both the big names for standard cars, and some more specialist insurers (like Adrian Flux) before stating to do anything modified - that way you won't get a shock.

If it's a rust free GSI shell, sell it on, loads of shagged GSI's about and buy a 1200 Corsa probably be cheaper and definately easier in the long run.

DVLA confirmed to me as long as they have confirmation (garage letter etc) of engine size then they will put a pre March 2001 vehicle into the apprioriate road tax group.
