Well had a bit of spare time today, so thought I would finally get around to taking the Mayfair apart to find out why I have no 4th or Reverse gears.
Was quite suprised how good nick the car is in, has been fully undersealed from new.
Didn't get as much done today as I had hoped, mainly due to the fact I couldn't find my 1" 1/2 socket for the torque conv bolt
First thing that surprised me was how clean the engine is
Torque conv. had surface rust on, but nothing major
After removing the governor, I noticed that the return spring has been damaged. When compressed, it was coming out of the side of the mechanism and getting trapped. Can't see this is cause the gear problems I've been having, but will replace it anyways
Next up I noticed that the start interlock switch bracket was bent, I guess this is why I had to wiggle the gear selector to get it to start sometimes
The forward clutch assembly is showing signs of damage to the casing, but nothing that would affect its operation.
This picture shows the Reverse clutch band. It appears something has become caught under the band and taken the friction material off.
When I striped the top & reverse clutch down I found lots if scoring marks on the metal plates and no friction material at all on the clutch disc's. This pictures shows what a good clutch plate looks like vs the one of the plates removed from the clutch assembly.
The rest of the engine seems in very good condition with very little wear on any of the components. Although I found loads of gunk in the valve block.
