Hi Guys Thought i`d start a thread on here about my Steel Blue Polo Coupe, (I`ve not had any feedback on any of the Polo/Vw Forums) I bought it in October for £450 from a local garage (came in as a trade-in) Its a 1300cc Spi with a 5 speed box First week i bought it i had the cam belt and water pump done, 65 miles later the gearbox started to whine so i bought a spare low milage engine and box, The following weekend i fitted the replacement gearbox only to find out it was a 4 speed in worse condition than the one it replaced So i took the 5 speed to a guy i know that repairs gearboxes and £135 and a good second hand 5th gearset later i`ve got a rebuilt gearbox, Which was fitted the following weekend, ;D I then drove it till December when the headgasket went £175 plus parts later its back in my possesion ;D 3 days later the drive flange has come loose and dropped all the gearbox oil all over the road, So its back at the garage at the moment to be repaired, Hopefully i did`nt kill another gearbox as i don`t now how long it had been leaking, Cheers Adrian P.s Sorry about my finger being in some of the photos but my phone was new lol

In between the mechanical disasters there has been some mods, I`ve removed the side strips, And bought some 13x6 Ultralites with a 10+ offset I`ve also had a 2nd hand n/s/f wing painted which i`ve fitted (colour match is`nt great but at least its not dented or rusty) I`ve also bought some second hand struts which i`ve had blasted and a blanking plate welded to the back of to neaten them up and stop them filling up with mud and corroding, They`ve just come back from the powdercoaters I`ve left a hole in the back of the blanking plates so i can fill them full of waxoyle then i`ll blank them off with a grommet These will then be rebuilt with new wheel bearings/top mounts and lowered inserts and springs Cheers Adrian

I`ve also bought a pair of Mk1 Golf Gti Vw11 calipers, I`ve stripped these down and had some stainless steel pistons machined up, I`ve also got a pair of Titanium bleed screws for them (only because my mate had them made for a project hes doing and sold me a pair cheap) Cheers Adrian P.s Any feedback is greatly recieved

Steel Blue is a nice colour, I had a squareback one. Superlights will be cool Nice to see a mk3 that's not ratty or wearing ATS.

That's a very late model being an M plate. I had a G40 on an M plate, was one of the very last G40's registered. Nice work on the struts, look very tidy. Great idea blanking them off too. A nice drop over those Ultralites and it'll be looking mighty fine. If you're intending to fit 175/50's they can look a bit small in the arches unless you're really low and then the ride and handing suffer terribly. Maybe try a 165/60 or 65 or better still a 175/60? Keep us posted.

(I`m going for a 60/40 drop) Cheers Adrian

G40's have 175/60's on 5 1/2" BBS alloys as standard so they'd be fine on a 6" rim. I reckon a 60/40 drop is ideal for a daily. Which kit you going for?

Very nice start! Same colour as my Golf I think.
I also like that the wheels fit well! Seen so many Polos with the front wheels sticking wildly out of the arches.

Yeah they normally fit Mini fitment 13x7 with a -7 offset which look wrong in my opinion Mine are also mini fitment but narrower with more offset, Good news from the garage it`s not another gearbox problem it was a blown oil temperature sensor ;D Cheers Adrian

Hi Just a small update and a question today ;D I`ve had real problems stripping the piston out of one of the Mk1 Glf Gti calipers, I tried an airline and a lever arm grease gun (an idea which i found online) So finally gave in and tried 2 local garages, They both tried and gave up saying the caliper was scrap (piston was now broken and seized) One of my work mates came up with an idea, (You`ve probably heard it before but it was news to me) I drilled a 7mm hole through the piston then tapped it wih an M8 thread, Then get a long M8 bolt to thread through the piston to touch the inside face of the caliper, Then as you tighten the bolt it extracts the piston, 2 minutes later and the piston was free of the caliper (this will only be an option if your replacing the pistons anyway) Now my question The surface of the caliper bore is quite rusty, Which is the best way to clean this out?? Is sand blasting to aggresive? Or should i just be using some fine wet and dry? Also how clean does it have to be? Cheers Adrian

Mmm, that don't look too good. The caliper bore needs to be clean, smooth and free from pitting where the piston seal makes contact. A new piston and seal won't work very well in a bore like that. A thorough but careful clean with scotchbrite might retrieve it but I think you'll need to get another caliper really, better to be safe than sorry.
