After much head scratching and careful consideration I have been forced to conclude that as strange as it may seem we don't have any cars that are actually of any use As I now have a job that involves leaving the house (been working from home for the past 18 months) and taking into account my wife & my plans for the future I think we're 2 cars short: - a car you can actually fit something in - a car that doesn't require a personal oil well to feed it I really don't want 2 more cars (that's a lie, but I don't have enough space / money) so something that fits both bills must be obtained. So here are my requirements (in no particular order) that have led to settling on an Audi 80 Avant TDi: - Needs to be an estate without being massive - Must do at least 50mpg with the potential to do more with a bit of hypermiling & a few mods - Will look most excellent hard-slammed on carefully chosen wheels - Excellent reliability & no fragile engine electrics (anything else I can fix) - Decent, good value motor factor parts availability (so 1 Benz is enough for me at the moment) - Bosch fuel pump (for veg oil compatibility) - Nothing Italian, nothing French (might sound weird but..) - Pre 95 only (mild flexability but pre 2000 firm) - PAS & ABS would be nice - Must be white, black or (at a push) red ONLY - Reasonably long MoT - I'm happy to tinker but won't be taking on a project - I've got too many of them already, this is a sensible daily! I think the only car I would bend these rules for is a Peugeot 505 dizzle estate but find one of them for sale... If anyone can think of anything that they honestly think ticks all those boxes then feel free to suggest, but preferably tell me about an immaculate, White Audi 80 Avant TDi for sale for £500 ;D

And there was me thinking you'd dislike your time in the Passat next weekend ;D I'll throw you the keys for a bit to see what you think of driving it. The one I have is a 1.9TD and AAZ engine code so no fancy electronics and perfectly happy on veg. Not very quick, but will cruise above speed limit and you have the Benz for being a tool in.. I'm working on a very broad assumption that an 80 Avant is near enough the same car

Negotiations at my (2-week old) job are proving tricky damn, a xantia or a 405/6 fit the bill there bar being french ! Yeah, wouldn't be wanting those I'm afraid..

I agree with Ben, I wouldn't rule out the passat B4 TD and TDI estates. I had the 1.9TD and did over 700miles to a tank, I was getting about 45-50mpg. Incredibly cheap to run in terms of servicing and reliability. As far as I know coilovers are cheap and common for the Passat, not so much for Audi 80s, unless I've got my facts wrong! I find myself in a similar predicament. All my 7 series have been sold and I'm looking for a diesel mile muncher, I actually work at home but I want to get out and about outside of work and 21mpg no longer works for me . I was extremely tempted by Bryn's/Ben's Passat when it came up for sale, and an Audi 80 is also on my list.

i'd go B3 or B4 passat as options, the B3 has either the 1.6 td engine intercooled (which produces not far off the same bhp as the 1.9) and late ones came with the 1.9 AAZ that ben has in the B4 avoid at all costs the 1z engined B4, i've had one and the clocks talk to the fuel pump and it was a nightmare, sligt faults and elctric gadgets everywhere.. personally i prefer the B3's looks, but here's 3 of my old ones to show how they can look B3 red b3 white B4 red i looked at a 80 avant when i bought the white one, they are smaller inside, more car for your money with the B3/B4, but they are getting more n more popular now, all 3 of those sold for an average of a grand each

Hmm.. I may have to do some further thinking about Passats - I can't think of any logical reason why I'd rather have an Audi 80 but I would.. Rob - you're right about the coilovers mate. I'm resigned to the idea of making some if I can find an Audi I'm happy with. Steve - it's Passats like yours that cause me not to dismiss them outright. I'll take the white B3 with the wheels off the red B4 please

I'll take the white B3 with the wheels off the red B4 please red b3 was my favourite, white one was best on juice, the B4 was a VR6 and was 'fun' but greedy sadly i don't own any of them any more.. if i wish i'd kept any it would be the Red B3

Just to throw a curve ball... How about a Volvo 850 TDi estate. It uses a 2.4 Audi engine (bosch fuel pump). 140bhp. Perhaps not quite 50mpg though.

Andy, not sure how I missed this - sorry! Any more details? Despite looking for about 6 weeks and failing to find anything that fits the bill I've done the only sensible thing and narrowed down my requirements even further.. I'm now pretty well set on a white one - please someone have one for sale thankyouplease

That white Avant on Ebay is literally round the corner from my house. It's pretty tidy in the flesh, it used to be decal'd up as a heating engineer's car

Would you be able to spare the time to have a quick look at it for me? Maybe start it up, have a peek underneath..?

'- Excellent reliability & no fragile engine electrics (anything else I can fix)'
That firmly rules out a B5 Passat then.
