That's pretty cool man, welcome to the forum too. I can offer you no advice but best of luck with it anyway and keep the photos coming. There plenty of brains on here that should be able to help plus I know RobOr on noskooljustcool.com is big into his beemers so he might be of some help too? Cool project though!

Thanks, i'll check that out - I know this is gonna take time, its been patially welded in the past, but I think it needs a new drivers floor panel and passenger side sill and lower wing repair panel on the passenger side...and parts arn't cheap for this car from what i've seen! Anyway, gonna try and get it outside to get a proper look underneath to see how bad it is! Its been stuck in a garage like that for 11 years, but I understand the gearbox and engine were rebuilt then and running at the time... I found the last tax disc for it too..

Very cool car but rust is your main enemy. They're terrible for it. The mechanicals are simple enough though. I'd forget about using genuine panels - if you can find them - as they are HUGELY expensive. Better idea would be to hone your metal working skills and repair what's already there. If you can get it on a spit ( or roll on its side on top of a few old matresses? ) it will make repairing the floors & sills far easier. Have you restored any other cars? First job would probably be to empty it of all the crud inside and then start at one corner and work your way round. It's a big job you've taken on, but the end result could be awesome.

i am currently recommissioning a 71 CS, which was laid up after a full resto in 1985; the body is ok, it is mainly stuff that is damaged due to storage (brakes, carbs , suspension etc.) ; you can actually buy a lot of panels directly from BMW, as they have a quite good classic department, but i agree with MIBs , with some metal skills you can make some panels ... though Karmann, who built the shell, have had an excellent reputation in build quality, their rust proofing rep is pretty bad ... so expect some metal that needs to be replaced... but anyway, for me the CS is one of the most beautiful designed cars, and as i never will be able to afford one, i am happy to work on the car from an elderly gent, as i will be allowed to use it in summer ....

Thanks for the comments guys - i've been looking at some panel costs from www.jaymic.com/ and www.wallothnesch.com/e/ and they ain't cheap! I think we're gonna get the car out next weekend and get underneath to see how bad the rot is (and get some better pics). I know we probably need a new drivers floor pan and a passenger sill and wing bottom panel - could do with building a spit really. Anyway, i found a load of other bits in the garage from other cars, BMW 1602/2002 Audi 80, BMW 2500/2800 etc...i'll try and get them on the classifieds section later today maybe..

I'd be interested in any 2002 stuff as my Mrs has one. Well, i've come across some arch repair panels, some from grilles (both sides) a load of gasket sets, switches, relays, wheel bearings, water pumps... I'll have a sort through and see what i can find and get back to you with some pics

These are indeed beautiful cars, I watched a basket case on eBay, would have loved to have bought it, but I'm not as brave as you are. Reckon a trip to Tony BMW's panel making thread might help you out

I have a 69 2800 CS painted in exactly the same colour as the nice one in the pic you provided (see my profile / thread)!
Yours actually looks a lot better than mine - It's been more than 2 1/2 years since I got mine and I still haven't finished it yet - The bulk of the work was carried out by DS Motorsport in Coventry so if I were you I'd speak to their metal working guy Aylwyn (Alan) as he's literally rebuilt the bottom 6 inches of mine from scratch!
Good luck with it, make sure you post a link to your classified ads!

How's the windscreen surround and scuttle? They seem ok - new panels have been welded in around this area - new panels around the strut top mounts already done too. To be honest, the top half of the car is not too bad - its the sills and the floor pan.

My dad had a 2800 CS a few years back - i think we have an old bonnet for one sat in the garage, but looks like it needs some work doing to it, but could be salvagable.. I can't find the link to your thread - can you PM me it? I'd be very interested in looking at it I'll get the bits added in the for sale forum shortly...
